Verbs of Motion with Prefixes II: Approaching, Passing, and Crossing
In this lesson, we will continue to explore Russian verbs of motion with prefixes. These prefixes add specific meanings of direction and manner to the basic verbs of motion, making your speech much more precise and expressive.
Today, we will focus on three crucial prefixes: под-, про-, and пере-.
➡️ 1. The Prefix ПОД- (pod-): Approaching
This prefix describes the action of approaching or coming up to something or someone. The key idea is that the subject gets close to the object but doesn't necessarily enter it or go past it. It’s about closing the distance.
🔹 Key Verbs:
🚶♂️ Подходить / Подойти (to walk up to)
🚗 Подъезжать / Подъехать (to drive/ride up to)
🔹 Grammar Point:
These verbs always require the preposition К followed by the Dative case.
They answer the question к кому? (to whom?) or к чему? (to what?).
🔹 Examples:
- Студент подошёл к доске. (The student walked up to the blackboard.)
- Машина подъехала к главному входу. (The car drove up to the main entrance.)
- Пожалуйста, подойди ко мне на минуту. (Please come up to me for a minute.)
A quick reminder: the form ко is used instead of к before words starting with certain consonant clusters, such as мне and всему.
➡️ 2. The Prefix ПРО- (pro-): Passing By / Through
The prefix про- is versatile and has two main meanings related to motion.
🔹 Key Verbs:
🚶♂️ Проходить / Пройти (to walk past/through)
🚗 Проезжать / Проехать (to drive/ride past/through)
Meaning A: To Pass By
This describes movement past an object or a point of reference.
🔹 Grammar Point:
For this meaning, use the preposition Мимо followed by the Genitive case.
It answers the question мимо чего? (past what?).
🔹 Examples:
- Мы прошли мимо театра. (We walked past the theater.)
- Автобус проехал мимо нашей остановки. (The bus drove past our stop.)
Meaning B: To Go Through or Cover a Distance
This meaning emphasizes the path taken through a space or the total distance covered.
🔹 Grammar Point:
This construction uses the Accusative case without a preposition to denote the distance or object passed through. The preposition через + Accusative is also common, especially for enclosed spaces.
🔹 Examples:
- За час мы прошли пять километров. (We walked five kilometers in an hour.)
- Поезд прошёл через длинный туннель. (The train went through a long tunnel.)
➡️ 3. The Prefix ПЕРЕ- (pere-): Crossing
The prefix пере- indicates movement across something, from one side to the other. Think of it as crossing a boundary, like a street, a river, a bridge, or a border.
🔹 Key Verbs:
🚶♂️ Переходить / Перейти (to walk across)
🚗 Переезжать / Переехать (to drive/ride across; also to move house)
🔹 Grammar Point:
These verbs require the Accusative case of the object being crossed. The preposition через + Accusative can also be used, often interchangeably.
They answer the question что? or через что? (what? or through/across what?).
🔹 Examples:
- Нужно перейти дорогу в правильном месте. (You need to cross the road in the correct place.)
- Мы переехали через мост и увидели город. (We drove across the bridge and saw the city.)
💡 Important Special Meaning:
The verb pair переезжать / переехать is also the primary way to say "to move" to a new home, city, or country.
- В прошлом году моя семья переехала в новый дом. (Last year my family moved to a new house.)
- Они планируют переехать в другую страну. (They are planning to move to another country.)
By mastering these three prefixes, you will significantly improve your ability to describe movements accurately and sound more like a native speaker.
