Verbs of Motion with Prefixes I: Entering, Exiting, Arriving, and Departing

Welcome to the next level of Russian verbs of motion! You are likely familiar with the basic pairs: идти/ходить (to go on foot) and ехать/ездить (to go by vehicle). Now, we will add prefixes to them to specify the direction and nature of the movement, a crucial skill for more nuanced communication.

➡️ The Core Concept: Prefixes and Aspect
When you add a prefix to a basic verb of motion, two important things happen:

  1. The new verb becomes perfective (совершенный вид). For instance, adding the prefix при- (arrival) to идти creates прийти (to arrive on foot). This new verb describes a single, completed action.
  2. A new imperfective (несовершенный вид) partner is formed. This new imperfective verb is typically created by adding the prefix to the multidirectional base verb (e.g., ходить becomes приходить).

This process gives you a completely new aspectual pair:
🚶‍♂️ приходить (imperfective) / прийти (perfective)
🚗 приезжать (imperfective) / приехать (perfective)

This lesson focuses on four fundamental prefixes that describe entering, exiting, arriving, and departing.

🚪 1. Entering: Prefix в- / во-
This prefix signifies movement into or entering an enclosed space. It is typically followed by the preposition в and a noun in the accusative case.

🔹 Verb Pair (on foot): входить (impf.) / войти (pf.)
Use входить for processes, repeated actions, or general statements. Use войти for a single, completed act of entering.

  • Обычно я вхожу в офис через главный вход. (I usually enter the office through the main entrance.) - Repeated action (impf.)
  • Профессор вошёл в аудиторию, и лекция началась. (The professor entered the auditorium, and the lecture began.) - Completed action (pf.)
*Note: войти has an irregular future tense: я войду, ты войдёшь... and past tense: вошёл, вошла.

🔹 Verb Pair (by vehicle): въезжать (impf.) / въехать (pf.)

  • Мы въезжали в город, когда нам позвонили. (We were driving into the city when they called us.) - Process (impf.)
  • Грузовик медленно въехал на территорию склада. (The truck slowly drove into the warehouse territory.) - Completed action (pf.)

🚶‍♀️ 2. Exiting: Prefix вы-
This prefix denotes movement out of a space. It is followed by the preposition из and a noun in the genitive case.

🔹 Verb Pair (on foot): выходить (impf.) / выйти (pf.)

  • Пассажиры выходят из вагона на платформу. (The passengers are exiting the train car onto the platform.) - Process (impf.)
  • Онá быстро вышла из комнаты. (She quickly exited the room.) - Completed action (pf.)
*Pay attention to the stress on вы- in the past tense of выйти: вы́шел, вы́шла, вы́шло, вы́шли.

🔹 Verb Pair (by vehicle): выезжать (impf.) / выехать (pf.)

  • Каждое утро я выезжаю из дома в 8 часов. (Every morning I drive out of the house at 8 o'clock.) - Repeated action (impf.)
  • Мы выехали из города до начала пробок. (We drove out of the city before the traffic jams started.) - Completed action (pf.)

🏁 3. Arriving: Prefix при-
This prefix indicates arrival at a destination. It is used with prepositions в or на followed by the accusative case.

🔹 Verb Pair (on foot): приходить (impf.) / прийти (pf.)

  • Курс начинается в 9, но некоторые студенты приходят позже. (The class starts at 9, but some students arrive later.) - Repeated action (impf.)
  • Наконец-то пришла весна! (Spring has finally arrived!) - Completed action (pf.)

🔹 Verb Pair (by vehicle): приезжать (impf.) / приехать (pf.)

  • Мои родственники часто приезжают к нам в гости. (My relatives often come to visit us.) - Repeated action (impf.)
  • Туристы приехали в Санкт-Петербург на поезде. (The tourists arrived in St. Petersburg by train.) - Completed action (pf.)

✈️ 4. Departing: Prefix у-
This prefix signifies departure or leaving from a place. It often implies a more permanent or long-term absence than вы-. It is used with из or с and the genitive case.

🔹 Verb Pair (on foot): уходить (impf.) / уйти (pf.)

  • Почему ты всегда уходишь с вечеринок так рано? (Why do you always leave parties so early?) - Repeated action (impf.)
  • Директор ушёл в отпуск на месяц. (The director has left for a vacation for a month.) - Completed action (pf.)

🔹 Verb Pair (by vehicle): уезжать (impf.) / уехать (pf.)

  • Перед тем как уезжать, не забудьте выключить свет. (Before leaving, don't forget to turn off the lights.) - General statement (impf.)
  • Они продали дом и уехали жить в другую страну. (They sold their house and left to live in another country.) - Completed action (pf.)

Mastering these four prefixes and their associated prepositions will significantly improve your fluency and precision when describing events.
