Mastering Participles: Active and Passive Forms

Welcome to the world of Russian participles! 🚀

Think of participles as a hybrid: part verb, part adjective. They describe a noun by telling us what action that noun is performing or what action is being performed on it. In English, we use forms like 'reading' (a reading boy) or 'written' (a written letter). Russian participles do the same job, but with more grammatical precision.

📌 The most important thing to remember: A participle functions like an adjective. It must agree in gender, number, and case with the noun it describes.

Let's break them down into four main types:

1️⃣ Active Participles (Действительные причастия)
These describe a noun that is actively performing an action.

▶️ Present Active Participles
Describes an action happening right now. This corresponds to the English '-ing' form when it acts as an adjective.
Formation:

  1. Take the verb's 3rd person plural present tense form (они делают, они говорят).
  2. Drop the final -т.
  3. Add the suffix -ущ-/-ющ- (for 1st conjugation verbs) or -ащ-/-ящ- (for 2nd conjugation verbs).
    Example:
    читать (to read) -> они читают -> читающий (the one who is reading)
    студент, читающий книгу -> a student reading a book

▶️ Past Active Participles
Describes an action that was completed in the past by the noun.
Formation:

  1. Take the past tense form of the verb (он сделал).
  2. If the stem ends in a vowel, drop the final -л and add -вш-.
  3. If the stem ends in a consonant, drop the final -л and add -ш-.
    Example:
    прочитать (to read - perfective) -> прочитал -> прочитавший (the one who has read)
    студент, прочитавший книгу -> a student who has read the book

2️⃣ Passive Participles (Страдательные причастия)
These describe a noun that is receiving an action; something is being done to it.

▶️ Present Passive Participles
Describes an action being performed on the noun right now.
Formation:

  1. Take the verb's 1st person plural present tense form (мы делаем, мы любим).
  2. Add the adjectival ending -ый/-ая/-ое.
    Example:
    уважать (to respect) -> мы уважаем -> уважаемый (the one that is being respected, i.e., respected)
    уважаемый коллега -> respected colleague
    💡 Note: These are less common for describing ongoing actions and are often used as fixed adjectives. The construction 'который + verb' is more frequent for ongoing passive actions.

▶️ Past Passive Participles
Describes an action that was completed on the noun in the past. These are extremely common and correspond to the English past participle (e.g., written, built, opened).
Formation is more complex:
✅ If the infinitive ends in -ать or -ять, add -нн- to the stem:
сделать -> сделанный (done/made)
написать -> написанный (written)
✅ If the infinitive ends in -ить or -еть, the suffix is usually -енн- (often stressed as -ённ-). The final consonant of the stem may change:
построить -> построенный (built)
пригласить -> приглашённый (invited)
✅ For some verbs (often monosyllabic or with specific endings like -нуть, -оть), add -т-:
открыть -> открытый (opened)
забыть -> забытый (forgotten)

📌 A Note on Short Forms
Past passive participles also have short forms (сделан, написана, открыто). These are used as predicates in a sentence to state a result or a state of being. This is a crucial concept.
Long form (adjective): Я прочитал написанную им книгу. (I read the book written by him.) - Here, 'написанную' describes the book.
Short form (predicate): Книга написана им. (The book was written by him.) - Here, 'написана' is the main action/state of the sentence.

Mastering participles will significantly elevate your Russian, making your speech and writing more sophisticated and nuanced. It is a key element of the B2 level. ✨
