Mastering Gerunds: Describing Simultaneous and Sequential Actions
Welcome to our lesson on one of the most elegant structures in Russian grammar: the gerund, or 'деепричастие'. Think of it as a verbal adverb. It describes an additional action performed by the same subject as the main verb, making your speech more concise and sophisticated.
In Russian, gerunds are indeclinable, meaning they never change their form. They come in two flavors, corresponding to the two verb aspects you already know: imperfective and perfective.
➡️ 1. Imperfective Gerunds (Деепричастия несовершенного вида)
These describe an action happening at the same time as the main action. The English equivalent is often a verb ending in "-ing" (e.g., "walking," "reading") or a phrase starting with "while". They answer the question "Что делая?" (While doing what?).
💡 How to form them:
Take the 3rd person plural (они) present tense form of an imperfective verb and replace the ending (-ют, -ут, -ят, -ат) with -я. If the stem ends in a sibilant consonant (ж, ч, ш, щ), use the suffix -а.
- читать (они читают) → читая (reading / while reading)
- смотреть (они смотрят) → смотря (watching / while watching)
- лежать (они лежат) → лёжа (lying / while lying)
Examples:
✅ Он шёл по улице, слушая музыку. (He was walking down the street while listening to music.)
✅ Разговаривая по телефону, она готовила ужин. (While talking on the phone, she was cooking dinner.)
A special case is the verb 'быть'. Its gerund is 'будучи' (being).
- Будучи студентом, я много работал. (Being a student, I worked a lot.)
➡️ 2. Perfective Gerunds (Деепричастия совершенного вида)
These describe an action that was completed before the main action. The English equivalent is often "having done something" or "after doing something." They answer the question "Что сделав?" (Having done what?).
💡 How to form them:
Take the past tense masculine form of a perfective verb and replace the -л suffix with -в. If the stem ends in a consonant (not -л), add -ши. For reflexive verbs (-ся), use the suffix -вшись.
- прочитать (он прочитал) → прочитав (having read)
- сделать (он сделал) → сделав (having done)
- вернуться (он вернулся) → вернувшись (having returned)
- принести (он принёс) → принёсши or принеся (having brought - 'принеся' is more common today)
Examples:
✅ Сделав домашнее задание, он пошёл гулять. (After having done his homework, he went for a walk.)
✅ Вернувшись домой, я сразу позвонил родителям. (Having returned home, I immediately called my parents.)
❗️ Crucial Rule: The Golden Rule of Gerunds
The subject of the main verb and the additional action (the gerund) MUST be the same person or thing.
❌ Incorrect: Подъезжая к станции, у меня слетела шляпа. (Approaching the station, my hat flew off.)
Why is it wrong? The hat didn't approach the station; "I" did. The sentence structure incorrectly implies the hat was performing the action.
✅ Correct: Когда я подъезжал к станции, у меня слетела шляпа. (When I was approaching the station, my hat flew off.)
This is the most common mistake, so always double-check who is performing both actions!
📌 Punctuation:
Gerunds and gerund phrases are almost always separated by commas in written Russian.
- Он сидел за столом, читая газету.
- Написав письмо, она пошла на почту.
To summarize:
🔹 Imperfective Gerund (-я/-а): Simultaneous action. (Что делая?)
🔹 Perfective Gerund (-в/-вши/-ши): Sequential action, completed first. (Что сделав?)
Mastering gerunds will elevate your Russian from good to great, allowing you to express complex ideas more naturally. Practice identifying the aspect and choosing the correct form!
