Verbs of Motion without Prefixes (идти/ходить, ехать/ездить)

Welcome to the lesson on Russian Verbs of Motion! This is a fundamental topic that adds a lot of nuance to how you describe movement. In English, we often just use 'to go'. In Russian, you have to be more specific. Today, we'll focus on the two most common pairs without prefixes: motion on foot and motion by transport.

The main idea is to distinguish between two types of movement:
1️⃣ Unidirectional Movement (Determinate verbs): This describes an action happening right now, in one specific direction. Think of it as a one-way trip.
🔄 Multidirectional Movement (Indeterminate verbs): This describes a repeated action, a round trip, a general ability, or movement without a specific single destination.

Let's break down the pairs.

🚶‍♂️ On Foot: Идти vs. Ходить

Both verbs mean 'to go on foot', but they are used in different contexts.

➡️ Идти (Unidirectional)
Use 'идти' when you are talking about walking in one direction, at this very moment.
🔹 It answers the question 'Куда ты идёшь?' (Where are you going right now?).
🔹 Example: Я иду в магазин. (I am going to the store now).
🔹 Example: Смотри, дождь идёт. (Look, it is raining. Yes, rain also uses this verb!)

🔄 Ходить (Multidirectional)
Use 'ходить' for actions that are regular, habitual, or involve movement in various directions or a round trip.
🔹 It describes a habit: Я хожу в спортзал каждый день. (I go to the gym every day).
🔹 It describes a round trip that has been completed: Вчера я ходил в кино. (Yesterday I went to the cinema, meaning I went there and came back).
🔹 It describes general, non-directional movement: Мы долго ходили по парку. (We walked around the park for a long time).
🔹 It describes ability: Мой сын уже ходит. (My son can already walk).

Present Tense Conjugation:
Идти:
я иду
ты идёшь
он/она/оно идёт
мы идём
вы идёте
они идут

Ходить:
я хожу
ты ходишь
он/она/оно ходит
мы ходим
вы ходите
они ходят

🚗 By Transport: Ехать vs. Ездить

This pair follows the exact same logic as 'идти/ходить', but for movement using any kind of transport (car, bus, train, bicycle, etc.).

➡️ Ехать (Unidirectional)
Use 'ехать' when you are traveling by some form of transport in one direction, at this very moment.
🔹 It answers the question 'Куда ты едешь?' (Where are you going right now by transport?).
🔹 Example: Мы едем в Москву. (We are on our way to Moscow right now).
Note: This implies we are currently in the car/train.
🔹 Example: Я еду на работу на автобусе. (I am going to work by bus right now).

🔄 Ездить (Multidirectional)
Use 'ездить' for regular trips, round trips, or general travel habits by transport.
🔹 It describes a habit: Он часто ездит в командировки. (He often goes on business trips).
🔹 It describes a completed round trip: В прошлом году мы ездили на море. (Last year we went to the seaside, meaning we went there and came back).
🔹 It describes ability: Ты умеешь ездить на велосипеде? (Can you ride a bicycle?).
🔹 It describes general travel: Я люблю ездить по России. (I love to travel around Russia).

Present Tense Conjugation:
Ехать:
я еду
ты едешь
он/она/оно едет
мы едем
вы едете
они едут

Ездить:
я езжу
ты ездишь
он/она/оно ездит
мы ездим
вы ездите
они ездят

Summary: When to use which?

Use ИДТИ / ЕХАТЬ (Unidirectional) for:
1️⃣ An action happening right now, in one direction.
🔸 Я иду в аптеку. (I am on my way to the pharmacy).
🔸 Они едут на дачу. (They are on their way to the dacha).
2️⃣ A specific, single, planned future trip.
🔸 Завтра мы идём в театр. (Tomorrow we are going to the theatre - a single planned event).

Use ХОДИТЬ / ЕЗДИТЬ (Multidirectional) for:
1️⃣ Repeated, regular, or habitual actions.
🔸 Я хожу на работу пешком. (I walk to work - it's my routine).
🔸 Она ездит в университет на метро. (She takes the metro to university - her routine).
2️⃣ A completed round trip (there and back).
🔸 В субботу мы ходили в ресторан. (On Saturday we went to a restaurant).
3️⃣ General ability to move.
🔸 Ребёнок ещё не ходит. (The child cannot walk yet).
🔸 Я не умею ездить на лошади. (I can't ride a horse).
4️⃣ Movement without a specific single destination.
🔸 Мы любим ходить по лесу. (We love walking in/around the forest).

Mastering these pairs is a huge step in sounding more natural in Russian. Pay close attention to the context of the sentence to choose the correct verb!
