Declension of Adjectives in All Cases
In this lesson, we will master the declension of Russian adjectives. This is a crucial skill because, in Russian, adjectives must always agree with the noun they describe in three ways: gender, number, and case. When a noun's case changes, the adjective's ending must change with it.
Let's explore how adjectives behave in all six grammatical cases.
⭐ A Fundamental Concept: Hard vs. Soft Stems
Before we begin, it's vital to understand the difference between hard and soft adjective stems, as this determines which ending to use.
🔹 Hard Stems: Most adjectives have a stem ending in a hard consonant. For example, the stem of новый (new) is нов-. These adjectives take "hard" endings.
🔹 Soft Stems: Adjectives with a stem ending in a soft consonant (like синий - blue, stem син-) or stems ending in г, к, х, ж, ш, ч, щ take "soft" endings.
📖 1. Nominative Case (Именительный падеж)
Answers the questions: Кто? (Who?), Что? (What?)
This is the basic, dictionary form of the adjective, used for the subject of a sentence.
Masculine: -ый / -ой (stressed) / -ий (soft)
Это красивый дом. (This is a beautiful house.)
Neuter: -ое / -ее (soft)
Я вижу синее небо. (I see a blue sky.)
Feminine: -ая / -яя (soft)
Это интересная книга. (This is an interesting book.)
Plural: -ые / -ие (soft)
Это новые студенты. (These are new students.)
🔗 2. Genitive Case (Родительный падеж)
Answers the questions: Кого? (Of whom?), Чего? (Of what?)
Used to indicate possession, absence (with нет), quantity, or after prepositions like у, без, для.
Masculine/Neuter: -ого / -его (soft)
У меня нет нового телефона. (I don't have a new phone.)
Feminine: -ой / -ей (soft)
Это подарок для лучшей подруги. (This is a gift for a best friend.)
Plural: -ых / -их (soft)
В центре нет высоких зданий. (There are no tall buildings in the center.)
🎯 3. Dative Case (Дательный падеж)
Answers the questions: Кому? (To whom?), Чему? (To what?)
Indicates the indirect object—the person or thing receiving the action.
Masculine/Neuter: -ому / -ему (soft)
Я звоню своему старому другу. (I am calling my old friend.)
Feminine: -ой / -ей (soft)
Он помогает своей младшей сестре. (He helps his younger sister.)
Plural: -ым / -им (soft)
Профессор даёт задание новым студентам. (The professor gives an assignment to the new students.)
➡️ 4. Accusative Case (Винительный падеж)
Answers the questions: Кого? (Whom?), Что? (What?)
Indicates the direct object of an action. The endings depend on whether the noun is animate or inanimate.
Feminine (Simple Rule): -ую / -юю (soft)
Я читаю русскую книгу. (I am reading a Russian book.)
Masculine & Plural (Animate/Inanimate Rule):
- If the noun is inanimate (a thing), the adjective form is the same as the Nominative.
Я вижу большой стол.(I see a big table.) - If the noun is animate (a person/animal), the adjective form is the same as the Genitive.
Я встретил своего старого друга.(I met my old friend.)
🛠️ 5. Instrumental Case (Творительный падеж)
Answers the questions: Кем? (With whom?), Чем? (With what?)
Used to show the instrument or tool used to perform an action, or with the preposition с (with).
Masculine/Neuter: -ым / -им (soft)
Он интересуется современным искусством. (He is interested in modern art.)
Feminine: -ой / -ей (soft)
Я говорю с новой учительницей. (I am talking with the new teacher.)
Plural: -ыми / -ими (soft)
Мы гордимся нашими хорошими результатами. (We are proud of our good results.)
📍 6. Prepositional Case (Предложный падеж)
Answers the questions: О ком? (About whom?), О чём? (About what?)
This case is always used with a preposition, such as о (about), в (in), or на (on).
Masculine/Neuter: -ом / -ем (soft)
Я мечтаю о большом доме. (I dream about a big house.)
Feminine: -ой / -ей (soft)
Мы говорили о последней новости. (We were talking about the latest news.)
Plural: -ых / -их (soft)
В этих старых книгах много картинок. (There are many pictures in these old books.)
Memorizing these endings takes practice, but once you do, your Russian will sound much more natural and correct. Good luck!
