The Future Tense: Compound and Simple Forms
Welcome to the lesson on the Russian Future Tense!
In English, we typically form the future tense using 'will' or 'be going to' (e.g., 'I will read', 'I am going to read'). Russian, however, has two distinct ways to express future actions, and the choice between them depends entirely on the aspect of the verb you use: imperfective or perfective.
Let's explore these two forms.
➡️ 1. The Compound Future (Будущее сложное время)
This form is used exclusively with imperfective verbs (несовершенный вид). Remember, imperfective verbs describe an action in progress, a repeated action, or a general fact, without focusing on its completion or result.
💡 The Compound Future is called 'compound' because it consists of two parts:
- The future tense of the verb быть (to be).
- The infinitive form of the imperfective verb you want to use.
Here is the conjugation of быть in the future tense. You must memorize this!
▫️ я буду (I will)
▫️ ты будешь (you will - informal)
▫️ он/она/оно будет (he/she/it will)
▫️ мы будем (we will)
▫️ вы будете (you will - formal/plural)
▫️ они будут (they will)
📌 Formula: буду/будешь/будет... + Infinitive of Imperfective Verb
Examples:
▫️ Что ты будешь делать завтра? (What will you be doing tomorrow?)
🔸 Here, делать (to do) is an imperfective verb. The focus is on the process or activity of 'doing'.
▫️ Вечером я буду читать книгу. (In the evening, I will be reading a book.)
🔸 читать (to read) is imperfective. The sentence describes the process of reading, not necessarily finishing the book.
▫️ Мы будем гулять в парке каждый день. (We will walk in the park every day.)
🔸 гулять (to walk) is imperfective, and 'каждый день' (every day) emphasizes the repetitive nature of the action.
✅ Use the Compound Future for actions that are ongoing, repeated, or when the process is more important than the result.
➡️ 2. The Simple Future (Будущее простое время)
This form is used exclusively with perfective verbs (совершенный вид). Perfective verbs, as you know, denote a completed action, a one-time event, or a result.
💡 The Simple Future is 'simple' because it's formed from just one word. Here's the trick: perfective verbs do not have a present tense. When you conjugate a perfective verb using the standard present tense endings, you are actually forming the Simple Future tense.
📌 Formula: Perfective Verb + Present Tense Endings
Let's look at the imperfective/perfective pair делать / сделать (to do/make).
▫️ я сделаю (I will do/complete)
▫️ ты сделаешь (you will do/complete)
▫️ он/она/оно сделает (he/she/it will do/complete)
▫️ мы сделаем (we will do/complete)
▫️ вы сделаете (you will do/complete)
▫️ они сделают (they will do/complete)
Examples:
▫️ Я сделаю домашнее задание завтра. (I will do/finish the homework tomorrow.)
🔸 сделать is perfective. The focus is on the completion and result of the homework.
▫️ Он прочитает эту книгу за один вечер. (He will read this book in one evening.)
🔸 прочитать (to read - perfective) implies he will finish the book.
▫️ Позвони мне, когда ты купишь продукты. (Call me when you buy the groceries.)
🔸 купить (to buy - perfective) refers to the single, completed act of purchasing.
✅ Use the Simple Future for actions that are one-time, have a clear beginning and end, and where the result is the main focus.
⭐ Summary: Imperfective vs. Perfective in the Future
Let's compare directly:
▫️ Я буду писать письмо. (Imperfective - I will be writing a letter. Focus on the process.)
▫️ Я напишу письмо. (Perfective - I will write a letter. Focus on the result of a finished letter.)
▫️ Они будут строить дом два года. (Imperfective - They will be building a house for two years. Focus on the long process.)
▫️ Они построят дом за два года. (Perfective - They will build a house in two years. Focus on the completed result.)
Mastering this distinction is a crucial step towards fluency. Always ask yourself: am I talking about a process or a result? Your answer will tell you which future tense to use.
