Present Tense of Regular -ER and -IR Verbs
🇪🇸 Lesson: Present Tense of Regular -ER and -IR Verbs
Welcome to our lesson on conjugating regular -ER and -IR verbs in the present tense (Presente de Indicativo). In Spanish, all verbs in their infinitive form (the basic, unconjugated form) end in either -AR, -ER, or -IR. You have likely already mastered -AR verbs. The great news is that conjugating -ER and -IR verbs follows a very similar and predictable pattern. Once you learn the rules for one, the other is incredibly simple!
📚 Part 1: Regular -ER Verbs
Verbs like comer (to eat), beber (to drink), and aprender (to learn) are common -ER verbs. To conjugate them, we follow a simple two-step process:
1️⃣ Find the stem: Drop the -ER ending from the infinitive verb.
👉 For comer, the stem is com-.
👉 For beber, the stem is beb-.
2️⃣ Add the ending: Attach the correct present tense ending to the stem, depending on the subject pronoun.
Here are the endings for regular -ER verbs:
- yo (I) ➡️ -o
- tú (you, informal) ➡️ -es
- él/ella/usted (he/she/you, formal) ➡️ -e
- nosotros/as (we) ➡️ -emos
- vosotros/as (you all, informal, Spain) ➡️ -éis
- ellos/ellas/ustedes (they/you all) ➡️ -en
Let's see it in action with the verb COMER (to eat):
- Yo como (I eat)
- Tú comes (You eat)
- Él come (He eats)
- Nosotros comemos (We eat)
- Vosotros coméis (You all eat)
- Ellos comen (They eat)
📚 Part 2: Regular -IR Verbs
Now, let's move on to -IR verbs, such as vivir (to live), escribir (to write), and abrir (to open). The process is identical: find the stem and add the correct ending.
The endings for -IR verbs are almost the same as for -ER verbs. There are only two small differences, in the nosotros/as and vosotros/as forms. This makes them very easy to learn together!
Here are the endings for regular -IR verbs:
- yo (I) ➡️ -o
- tú (you, informal) ➡️ -es
- él/ella/usted (he/she/you, formal) ➡️ -e
- nosotros/as (we) ➡️ -imos (❗️Different from -ER)
- vosotros/as (you all, informal, Spain) ➡️ -ís (❗️Different from -ER)
- ellos/ellas/ustedes (they/you all) ➡️ -en
Let's conjugate the verb VIVIR (to live):
- Yo vivo (I live)
- Tú vives (You live)
- Ella vive (She lives)
- Nosotros vivimos (We live)
- Vosotros vivís (You all live)
- Ustedes viven (You all live)
✅ Summary & Comparison
Let's put the endings side-by-side. Notice how they are identical except for the 'we' and 'you all (Spain)' forms.
| Pronoun | -ER Verb Ending | -IR Verb Ending |
|---|---|---|
| yo | -o | -o |
| tú | -es | -es |
| él/ella/ud. | -e | -e |
| nosotros/as | -emos | -imos |
| vosotros/as | -éis | -ís |
| ellos/as/uds | -en | -en |
To master this, remember the core pattern: drop the infinitive ending and add the new one. Practice is the best way to make this knowledge automatic. Try conjugating other verbs like correr (to run) or decidir (to decide) on your own!
