Present Tense of Regular -AR Verbs
Welcome to the world of Spanish verbs! 🇪🇸
Verbs are the action words of a language, and in Spanish, they change their form depending on who is performing the action. This is called 'conjugation'. It might seem a bit tricky at first, but once you learn the pattern, it becomes second nature!
In Spanish, there are three main groups of regular verbs, identified by the last two letters of their basic form (the infinitive): verbs ending in -AR, -ER, and -IR. Today, we will focus on the largest and most common group: regular -AR verbs.
✨ What is Conjugation?
Think of it like a code. The infinitive is the basic, unconjugated verb, like 'hablar' (to speak). To use it in a sentence, we need to change its ending to match the subject (the person or thing doing the action).
In English, we do this a little bit: 'I speak', but 'he speaks'. In Spanish, this happens for almost every subject.
First, let's review the subject pronouns:
🧍 Yo -> I
🧍 Tú -> You (informal, for friends, family)
🧍 Él / Ella -> He / She
🧐 Usted (Ud.) -> You (formal, for showing respect)
👨👩👧👦 Nosotros / Nosotras -> We (masculine/mixed group / feminine only)
👨👩👧👦 Vosotros / Vosotras -> You all (informal, used mainly in Spain)
👨👩👧👦 Ellos / Ellas -> They (masculine/mixed group / feminine only)
🧐 Ustedes (Uds.) -> You all (formal, and also the standard 'you all' in Latin America)
📚 The Magic Formula for -AR Verbs
Conjugating regular -AR verbs in the present tense is a simple two-step process:
1️⃣ Find the stem: Take the infinitive verb (e.g., 'cantar' - to sing) and remove the -AR ending. What's left is the stem ('cant-').
2️⃣ Add the ending: Add the correct present tense ending to the stem, depending on the subject.
Here are the endings you need to memorize for -AR verbs:
👉 Yo -> -o
👉 Tú -> -as
👉 Él / Ella / Usted -> -a
👉 Nosotros / Nosotras -> -amos
👉 Vosotros / Vosotras -> -áis
👉 Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes -> -an
Let's see it in action with the verb HABLAR (to speak). The stem is habl-.
Yo + habl- + o = Yo hablo (I speak)
Tú + habl- + as = Tú hablas (You speak)
Él + habl- + a = Él habla (He speaks)
Nosotros + habl- + amos = Nosotros hablamos (We speak)
Vosotros + habl- + áis = Vosotros habláis (You all speak)
Ellos + habl- + an = Ellos hablan (They speak)
See the pattern? It's consistent for all regular -AR verbs!
Let's try another one: ESTUDIAR (to study). The stem is estudi-.
🔹 Yo estudio español. (I study Spanish.)
🔹 ¿Tú estudias mucho? (Do you study a lot?)
🔹 Ella estudia en la biblioteca. (She studies in the library.)
🔹 Nosotros estudiamos juntos. (We study together.)
🔹 Ustedes estudian historia. (You all study history.)
💡 An Important Tip: Dropping the Pronoun
Because the verb ending clearly indicates who is doing the action, native Spanish speakers often omit the subject pronoun.
Instead of saying 'Yo hablo español', it's more common and natural to simply say 'Hablo español'. The '-o' ending already tells us the subject is 'Yo'.
This is true for all subjects, except when you need to clarify or emphasize who you're talking about (e.g., distinguishing between 'Él habla' and 'Ella habla').
To recap: To conjugate a regular -AR verb in the present tense, you just drop the -AR and add the correct ending: -o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an. Now you are ready to start forming your own sentences!
