The Prepositional Case: 'About' and Advanced Locations
Let's expand our knowledge of the Prepositional Case (Предложный падеж).
You likely know its primary function from A1: to indicate location using the prepositions 'в' (in) and 'на' (on).
📍 Я живу в Москве. (I live in Moscow.)
📍 Книга лежит на столе. (The book is on the table.)
Today, we will explore two more crucial aspects of this case: talking 'about' something and understanding more complex location rules.
📖 Part 1: The 'About' Meaning with О / ОБ / ОБО
The Prepositional Case is not just for 'where'; it's also for 'what about' or 'who about'. To express this, we use the preposition 'о' (about). This preposition changes its form depending on the first letter of the word that follows it, making the language sound more fluid.
1️⃣ Use О [o] when the next word starts with a consonant.
🔸 Мы говорим о погоде. (We are talking about the weather.)
🔸 Я читаю книгу о животных. (I am reading a book about animals.)
2️⃣ Use ОБ [ob] when the next word starts with a vowel (а, о, у, э, и).
🔸 Он рассказал об Иване. (He told a story about Ivan.)
🔸 Я думаю об экзамене. (I am thinking about the exam.)
3️⃣ Use ОБО [obo] in a few specific, important cases that you should memorize.
🔸 обо мне (about me) -> Она заботится обо мне. (She takes care of me.)
🔸 обо всём (about everything)
🔸 обо всей (about the whole - feminine)
🔸 обо всех (about all/everyone)
✍️ Common Verbs used with 'О/ОБ/ОБО'
These verbs very often require the Prepositional Case to complete their meaning:
- говорить/поговорить о... - to talk/speak about...
- думать/подумать о... - to think about...
- рассказывать/рассказать о... - to tell about...
- писать/написать о... - to write about...
- читать/прочитать о... - to read about...
- мечтать о... - to dream about...
- заботиться/позаботиться о... - to take care of...
- спрашивать/спросить о... - to ask about...
🤔 Example:
Он всегда мечтает о новом доме. (He is always dreaming about a new house.)
🗺️ Part 2: Advanced Locations with В and НА
While the basic 'в' (in an enclosed space) and 'на' (on a surface) rule is a great start, the A2 level requires more nuance.
Let's refine the rules:
➡️ В (in/at) is used for:
- Cities, countries, continents (with some exceptions): в России, в Париже, в Европе.
- Enclosed spaces: в комнате (in the room), в магазине (in the store), в театре (in the theater).
- Institutions (as physical buildings): в университете, в школе.
➡️ НА (on/at) is used for:
- Open spaces and surfaces: на улице (on the street), на площади (on the square), на пляже (on the beach).
- Events: на концерте (at the concert), на выставке (at the exhibition), на уроке (at the lesson).
- Cardinal directions: на севере (in the north), на юге (in the south), на западе (in the west), на востоке (in the east).
- Some geographical locations like islands, peninsulas, and mountain ranges: на Кубе (in Cuba), на Кавказе (in the Caucasus).
- Some places of work or study, often implying the activity, process, or department rather than just the building:
🔸 на почте (at the post office)
🔸 на заводе (at the factory)
🔸 на факультете (at the faculty, e.g., 'I study at the Faculty of Arts')
The key is to remember many of these as set phrases. For example, a student is 'в университете' (physically inside the university building) but studies 'на факультете' (at a specific faculty).
✨ A Quick Recap of Endings
Remember to apply the correct Prepositional endings to the nouns that follow these prepositions!
- Masculine: -е (на столе), but sometimes -у in special cases (в саду, в шкафу).
- Feminine: -е (о книге), but -и for words ending in -ь or -ия (о России, на площади).
- Neuter: -е (в окне), but -ии for words ending in -ие (в здании).
- Plural: -ах / -ях (о друзьях, о городах).
Mastering these two functions of the Prepositional Case will significantly improve your ability to have more complex and natural conversations in Russian.
