The Instrumental Case: 'With' and 'By means of'

Welcome to our lesson on one of the most functional Russian cases: the Instrumental Case (Творительный падеж).
Its name comes from the verb "творить" (to create), as it often describes the instrument or tool used to do or create something.

This case primarily answers two key questions:
❓ Кем? — By whom? / With whom?
❓ Чем? — With what? / By what means?

Let's break down its two main uses, which are essential for A2 level.

1️⃣ Meaning 1: Accompaniment ('Together with')

When you want to express that an action is done together with someone or something, you use the preposition "с" followed by a noun in the Instrumental case. Think of it as partnership or accompaniment.

Here are some examples:
☕️ Я пью кофе с молоком. — I drink coffee with milk.
🐶 Он гуляет с собакой. — He is walking with the dog.
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Мы разговариваем с друзьями. — We are talking with friends.

➡️ Note: The preposition "с" sometimes changes to "со" to make pronunciation easier, especially before words starting with two or more consonants. For example: со мной (with me), со студентом (with the student).

2️⃣ Meaning 2: Instrument or Means ('By means of')

This is the 'tool' function of the case. It explains how an action is performed or what instrument is used to do it. The most crucial rule here is that in Russian, you do not use a preposition for this meaning. This is a common point of confusion for English speakers, who use 'with' or 'by'.

Observe the difference:
✍️ Я пишу ручкой. — I write with a pen. (Literally: "I write pen-instrumental")
🥄 Она ест суп ложкой. — She eats soup with a spoon.
🚗 Мы едем на работу автобусом. — We go to work by bus.

So, if you are with a friend, it's "с другом". If you write with a pen, it's just "ручкой".

🛠️ How to Form the Instrumental Case: Nouns

Mastering the endings is key. Here is a guide:

🔹 Masculine Nouns

  • Ends in a consonant → add -ом
  • стол → столом
  • друг → с другом
  • Ends in -й or -ь (soft sign) → change to -ем
  • музей → музеем
  • учитель → с учителем

🔸 Feminine Nouns

  • Ends in -а → change to -ой
  • мама → с мамой
  • книга → книгой
  • Ends in -я → change to -ей
  • неделя → с неделей
  • земля → землёй
  • Ends in -ь (soft sign) → change to -ью
  • ночь → ночью
  • дверь → за дверью

◽ Neuter Nouns

  • Ends in -о → change to -ом
  • окно → под окном
  • молоко → с молоком
  • Ends in -е → change to -ем
  • море → над морем
  • солнце → под солнцем

🔷 Plural Nouns (all genders)

  • The ending is either -ами or -ями.
  • студенты → со студентами
  • друзья → с друзьями
  • книги → с книгами
  • ножницы (plural only) → ножницами

✨ A Note on Adjectives

Adjectives must also agree with the noun in case, number, and gender.

  • Masculine & Neuter: -ым / -им

  • с новым другом (with a new friend)

  • летним утром (on a summer morning)

  • Feminine: -ой / -ей

  • с красивой девушкой (with a beautiful girl)

  • свежей водой (with fresh water)

  • Plural: -ыми / -ими

  • с хорошими друзьями (with good friends)

📌 Summary & Key Takeaway

To decide how to use the Instrumental case, always ask yourself:

  1. Am I doing something together with someone/something?
    ➡️ YES: Use с + Instrumental. (Я иду в парк с сестрой.)

  2. Am I describing the tool, instrument, or means of an action?
➡️ YES: Use the Instrumental case alone, with no preposition. (Я рисую карандашом.)

Understanding this distinction is a major step forward in your Russian studies. Practice these two functions, and they will quickly become intuitive!
