The Past Tense with Aspect

In Russian, almost every verb has a partner! This fundamental concept is called 'aspect'. We have Imperfective (несовершенный вид - НСВ) and Perfective (совершенный вид - СВ) verbs. Think of them as two different camera lenses for looking at past actions.

➡️ The Imperfective lens focuses on the process, the duration, or the repetition of an action.
➡️ The Perfective lens focuses on the result or the completion of a single action.

Understanding which 'lens' to use is essential for speaking Russian naturally and correctly. Let's explore how this works in the past tense.

Imperfective Past (НСВ): The Process

You use the Imperfective Past when you want to talk about:

🔄 A repeated or habitual action in the past.

  • Раньше я часто читал русские книги. (I used to read Russian books often.)
  • Каждое лето мы ездили на море. (Every summer we would go to the sea.)

⏳ An action in progress over a period of time. The focus is on the 'doing', not the 'done'. The result is unknown or unimportant.

  • Вчера вечером я смотрел телевизор. (Yesterday evening, I was watching TV.)
  • Что ты делал в субботу? (What were you doing on Saturday?) - This is a general question about your activities, not about a specific completed task.

✅ A general statement of fact that an action took place at least once.

  • Вы пробовали борщ? (Have you tried borsch?) - Asking if this event ever happened in your life.

💡 Signal words often used with the Imperfective past include: часто (often), обычно (usually), каждый день (every day), всегда (always), долго (for a long time).

Perfective Past (СВ): The Result

Now, let's switch to the Perfective 'lens'. You use the Perfective Past when you want to talk about:

🏁 A single, completed action with a clear result. The task is finished and done.

  • Вчера я прочитал всю книгу. (Yesterday I read/finished the whole book.)
  • Мы построили дом. (We built/finished the house.)

💥 An action that happened at a specific moment, or suddenly.

  • Он вдруг понял свою ошибку. (He suddenly understood his mistake.)
  • Поезд пришёл ровно в 5 часов. (The train arrived at exactly 5 o'clock.)

➡️ A sequence of completed actions. One finished thing happened after another.

  • Я встал, умылся и позавтракал. (I got up, washed my face, and had breakfast.) - A chain of finished events.

💡 Signal words can include: наконец (finally), вдруг (suddenly), or phrases indicating a result like за час (in an hour).

A Key Distinction: Annulled Result

Pay close attention to verbs of motion. The choice of aspect can tell you if the person is still there or has left.

  • К нам приходил врач. (A doctor came to see us [and has since left].)
The action happened, but its result—the doctor being here—is cancelled or 'annulled'. We use Imperfective.

  • К нам пришёл врач. (A doctor has come to see us [and is still here].)
The action was completed and its result is still valid. We use Perfective.

This also works with other actions:

  • Кто открывал окно? (Who opened the window?) - A question often asked when the window is found open, focusing on the current state resulting from a past action.
  • Кто открыл окно? (Who opened the window?) - A neutral question about the past completed action itself.

To master aspects, always ask yourself: Am I talking about the journey (the process) or the destination (the result)?

Journey ➡️ Imperfective (НСВ)
Destination ➡️ Perfective (СВ)
