Verb Conjugation: Present Tense

Welcome to the lesson on Verb Conjugation in the Present Tense! This is a core concept in Russian grammar.

➡️ What is Verb Conjugation?

In English, we say "I speak," "you speak," "we speak," but "he/she speaks." That little change in "speaks" is conjugation. In Russian, this change happens for almost every person, making it very important to learn. It's how we show who is doing the action.

The present tense in Russian is used for actions happening now ("I am reading"), actions that happen regularly ("I read every day"), or general truths ("The sun rises in the east").

➡️ The Infinitive: The 'To Do' Form

Every verb has a basic, unchanged form called the infinitive. In English, this is the "to" form, like "to read," "to speak," "to know."
In Russian, you can usually spot an infinitive by its ending. The most common one is -ть.
🔹 читать (to read)
🔹 знать (to know)
🔹 работать (to work)
🔹 говорить (to speak)

To use a verb in a sentence, we need to change this infinitive form. We do this by first finding the verb's "stem."

💡 How to find the stem?
Simply remove the infinitive ending (-ть).
🔹 читать → чита-
🔹 говорить → говор-

Once you have the stem, you add a new ending based on the person (Я, ты, он, etc.) and the verb's conjugation group.

➡️ The Two Conjugation Groups

Russian verbs are divided into two main patterns, or "conjugations." Knowing which group a verb belongs to tells you which set of endings to use.

1️⃣ First Conjugation (-Е- group)
These are the most common verbs. Many verbs ending in -ать, -ять, and -еть belong to this group. The letter -е- (or -ё-) is a key feature in their endings.

Let's conjugate the verb читать (to read). The stem is чита-.

✅ Endings for First Conjugation:
Я (I) → -ю or -у
Ты (you, informal) → -ешь
Он/Она (he/she) → -ет
Мы (we) → -ем
Вы (you, formal/plural) → -ете
Они (they) → -ют or -ут

🔹 Я читаю — I read / I am reading
🔹 Ты читаешь — You read
🔹 Он/Она читает — He/She reads
🔹 Мы читаем — We read
🔹 Вы читаете — You read
🔹 Они читают — They read

Another example: знать (to know), stem зна-.
🔹 Я знаю — I know
🔹 Ты знаешь — You know
🔹 Он/Она знает — He/She knows

2️⃣ Second Conjugation (-И- group)
Most verbs ending in -ить belong to this group. The letter -и- is their signature feature.

Let's conjugate говорить (to speak). The stem is говор-.

✅ Endings for Second Conjugation:
Я (I) → -ю or -у
Ты (you, informal) → -ишь
Он/Она (he/she) → -ит
Мы (we) → -им
Вы (you, formal/plural) → -ите
Они (they) → -ят or -ат

🔹 Я говорю — I speak / I am speaking
🔹 Ты говоришь — You speak
🔹 Он/Она говорит — He/She speaks
🔹 Мы говорим — We speak
🔹 Вы говорите — You speak
🔹 Они говорят — They speak

Notice the difference in the endings:
First Conjugation uses -ешь, -ет, -ем, -ете, -ют.
Second Conjugation uses -ишь, -ит, -им, -ите, -ят.

💡 Key Takeaway:
To conjugate a Russian verb in the present tense:

  1. Identify the verb's infinitive form (e.g., читать, говорить).
  2. Determine its conjugation group (usually by looking at the infinitive ending: -ать, -ять for Group 1; -ить for Group 2).
  3. Remove the infinitive ending to find the stem.
  4. Add the correct personal ending for that group.

Of course, there are exceptions and some tricky verbs, but mastering these two patterns is a huge step forward. You can now form thousands of correct Russian sentences! Practice is key.
