The Prepositional Case: Location and Topics

Welcome to the lesson on the Prepositional Case, or as it's called in Russian, Предложный падеж (Predlozhniy padezh).

This case is quite special because, as its name suggests, it is ALWAYS used with a preposition. You will never see a noun in the Prepositional case standing on its own. Its main job is to answer two very important questions:

📍 Где? (Gdye?) — Where?
🗣️ О ком? / О чём? (O kom? / O chyom?) — About whom? / About what?

Let's explore each function in detail.

Part 1: Location (Где? - Where?)

This is the most frequent use of the Prepositional case. When you want to say that something or someone is in, at, or on a location, you will use this case with the prepositions в (in/at) or на (on/at).

🔹 The Preposition в (v)
This preposition generally means "in" or "inside". You use it for locations that are enclosed spaces.

  • Countries and cities: в России (in Russia), в Лондоне (in London)
  • Buildings and rooms: в школе (in school), в комнате (in the room)
  • General enclosed areas: в парке (in the park), в сумке (in the bag)

🔹 The Preposition на (na)
This preposition generally means "on" or "at". You use it for flat surfaces, open areas, and events.

  • Surfaces: на столе (on the table), на стене (on the wall)
  • Open spaces: на улице (on the street)
  • Events: на концерте (at the concert), на уроке (at the lesson)
  • Some specific places (it's best to memorize these): на работе (at work), на почте (at the post office), на стадионе (at the stadium)

The choice between в and на can sometimes be tricky, but the "inside vs. on a surface/event" distinction is a very helpful rule of thumb.

How to Form the Prepositional Case Endings

To use this case correctly, you need to change the ending of the noun.

masculus For Masculine Nouns:

  • If it ends in a consonant, add -е.
    стол (table) → на столе́
  • If it ends in -й or -ь, replace it with -е.
    музей (museum) → в музе́е
    словарь (dictionary) → в словаре́

🎀 For Feminine Nouns:

  • If it ends in -а, replace it with -е.
    Москва (Moscow) → в Москве́
  • If it ends in -я or -ь, replace it with -и.
    Россия (Russia) → в Росси́и
    площадь (square) → на пло́щади

neuter For Neuter Nouns:

  • If it ends in -о, replace it with -е.
    письмо (letter) → в письме́
  • If it ends in -е, the ending does not change.
    море (sea) → на мо́ре

❗️ Important Exceptions for Location!
A small but important group of masculine nouns takes the ending -у́ (stressed) in the Prepositional case, but only when talking about location with в or на.

  • лес (forest) → в лесу́
  • аэропорт (airport) → в аэропорту́
  • пол (floor) → на полу́
  • шкаф (wardrobe) → в шкафу́

Part 2: Topic of Conversation (О чём? / О ком? - About What? / About Whom?)

The Prepositional case is also used to indicate the topic of a conversation, thought, or book. For this, we use the preposition о (o), which means "about".

The noun endings are the same as above (-е or -и), but please note: the -у exception does not apply here. It's only for location!

The preposition о has a couple of variations:

  • о is used before consonants: о театре (about the theater)
  • об is used before vowels (а, о, у, и, э): об актёре (about the actor)

Let's see it in action:

  • Я читаю книгу о Росси́и. (I am reading a book about Russia.)
  • Мы говорим о рабо́те. (We are talking about work.)
  • Он думает об экза́мене. (He is thinking about the exam.)

Summary

✅ The Prepositional case always needs a preposition.
✅ It answers Где? (Where?) with prepositions в/на and О ком/чём? (About whom/what?) with preposition о.
✅ The primary ending is -е.
✅ Nouns ending in -ия, -ие, and feminine nouns in -ь change to -и.
✅ Remember the special location-only ending -у for a few masculine nouns like в лесу́.
