The Future Tense: Simple and Compound

The Future Tense in Russian: Simple and Compound

Welcome to our lesson on the Future Tense! In Russian, expressing future actions is quite interesting because it's closely tied to the concept of verb aspects: Imperfective and Perfective. Russian has two primary ways to form the future tense, and the one you choose depends on the meaning you wish to convey.

1️⃣ The Compound Future (для несовершенного вида)
2️⃣ The Simple Future (для совершенного вида)

The choice between them depends entirely on the aspect of the verb, which signals whether the action is a process or a completed event.

➡️ 1. The Compound Future Tense (Будущее сложное время)

This form is used with imperfective verbs (несовершенный вид - НСВ). You should use it when you want to talk about:

🔹 An action in progress in the future.
Example: "I will be working at 5 PM."
🔹 A repeated or habitual action in the future.
Example: "I will go for a run every morning."
🔹 A process, without emphasizing its completion or result.
Example: "I will be thinking about your proposal."

🔧 How to form it:
The formula is very straightforward and consistent:
Future Tense of the verb БЫТЬ (to be) + Infinitive of the main imperfective verb.

First, it is essential to memorize the future tense conjugation of the helper verb БЫТЬ:

я буду (I will)
ты будешь (you will - informal)
он/она/оно будет (he/she/it will)
мы будем (we will)
вы будете (you will - formal/plural)
они будут (they will)

Now, let's combine this with some common imperfective verbs like читать (to read), работать (to work), or отдыхать (to rest).

📚 Examples:
🔸 Завтра я буду читать книгу. (Zavtra ya budu chitat' knigu.)
Translation: Tomorrow I will be reading a book. (The focus is on the process of reading, not necessarily on finishing the book).

🔸 Мы будем работать в субботу. (My budem rabotat' v subbotu.)
Translation: We will be working on Saturday. (This describes the activity we will be engaged in).

🔸 Они будут отдыхать всё лето. (Oni budut otdyhat' vsyo leto.)
Translation: They will be resting all summer. (This describes a long, continuous process in the future).

➡️ 2. The Simple Future Tense (Будущее простое время)

This form is used with perfective verbs (совершенный вид - СВ). You should use it when you want to talk about:

🔹 A future action that will be completed.
🔹 A single, one-time action in the future.
🔹 The result of an action.

🔧 How to form it:
This is where the name 'simple' comes from. Perfective verbs do not have a present tense. When you conjugate a perfective verb using the standard present tense endings, you are actually forming the simple future tense. There is no helper verb needed.

Let's compare an imperfective/perfective pair:
Imperfective: делать (to do/make)
Perfective: сделать (to do/make and finish)

Now, let's conjugate the perfective verb сделать. The endings are the same as present tense endings, but the meaning is future!

я сделаю (I will do/make it)
ты сделаешь (you will do/make it)
он/она/оно сделает (he/she/it will do/make it)
мы сделаем (we will do/make it)
вы сделаете (you will do/make it)
они сделают (they will do/make it)

📚 Examples:
🔸 Завтра я прочитаю книгу. (Zavtra ya prochitayu knigu.)
Translation: Tomorrow I will read the book (and finish it). (The focus is on the result, the completion of the reading).

🔸 Мы сделаем домашнее задание вечером. (My sdelayem domashneye zadaniye vecherom.)
Translation: We will do our homework in the evening (and complete it).

🔸 Она напишет письмо. (Ona napishet pis'mo.)
Translation: She will write a letter (implying she will finish writing it).

✅ Summary: Process vs. Result

The most important takeaway is the distinction between focusing on a process versus a result.

Compound Future (Process)
🔹 Verb: Imperfective (e.g., смотреть - to watch)
🔹 Form: буду + infinitive
🔹 Example: Я буду смотреть фильм. (I will be watching a movie.)
🔹 Meaning: The focus is on the activity of watching.

Simple Future (Result)
🔹 Verb: Perfective (e.g., посмотреть - to watch/have a look)
🔹 Form: Conjugated perfective verb
🔹 Example: Я посмотрю фильм. (I will watch the movie.)
🔹 Meaning: The focus is on the completion of the action.
