The Accusative Case for Direction of Motion
Welcome to our lesson on expressing movement! 🗺️
Today, we'll learn how to say where you are going in Russian. This is a very common and useful topic. In English, you say 'I am going TO the park'. That little word 'to' indicates direction. In Russian, we show this direction using a special grammar case called the Accusative case.
First, let's learn a crucial question: Куда́? (Koo-DA?). This means 'Where to?' or 'To what place?'. It specifically asks about the destination of a movement.
➡️ Куда́ ты идёшь? - Where are you going (to)?
It's very important not to confuse Куда́? with Где? (Gdye?). Где? means 'Where?' and asks about a static location.
📍 Где ты? - Where are you?
So, remember:
- Movement towards a place =
Куда́? - Being in a place =
Где?
The answer to the question Куда́? always requires the Accusative case.
Prepositions of Direction: В and НА
To indicate direction, we use two main prepositions before the noun: в (in/into) and на (on/onto).
1️⃣ The Preposition В (in/into)
We use в when talking about going into an enclosed space or a location with clear boundaries, like a building, a city, or a country.
Think of it as 'going inside' something.
Examples of places that use в:
в банк(to the bank)в магази́н(to the store)в шко́лу(to school)в университе́т(to the university)в теа́тр(to the theater)в кино́(to the cinema)в го́род(to the city)в Росси́ю(to Russia)
2️⃣ The Preposition НА (on/onto)
We use на for open spaces, events, and some specific locations that are exceptions by tradition.
Think of it as 'going onto' a surface or 'to' an event.
Examples of places that use на:
на рабо́ту(to work)на у́лицу(to the street)на стадио́н(to the stadium)на конце́рт(to a concert)на ле́кцию(to a lecture)на по́чту(to the post office)на вокза́л(to the train station) - Note: this is a building, but it's a common exception!
Memorizing which places use в and which use на is important.
How to Form the Accusative Case for Direction
Now for the main part! When we use в or на to show direction, the noun that follows must be in the Accusative case. Here’s how the endings change for inanimate nouns (places, objects).
📘 Masculine Nouns
Good news! For inanimate masculine nouns (ending in a consonant, -й, -ь), the ending does not change.
парк(a park) ->Я иду́ в парк.музе́й(a museum) ->Мы идём в музе́й.стадио́н(a stadium) ->Они́ иду́т на стадио́н.
📗 Neuter Nouns
More good news! Neuter nouns (ending in -о, -е) also do not change in the Accusative case.
кино́(cinema) ->Ты идёшь в кино́?мо́ре(sea) ->Мы е́дем на мо́ре.зда́ние(building) ->Он идёт в зда́ние.
📕 Feminine Nouns
This is where you need to pay attention! Feminine nouns DO change their endings.
- If the noun ends in
-а, change it to-у. шко́ла(school) ->в шко́лурабо́та(work) ->на рабо́туу́лица(street) ->на у́лицу- If the noun ends in
-я, change it to-ю. Росси́я(Russia) ->в Росси́юку́хня(kitchen) ->на ку́хню- If the noun ends in a soft sign
-ь, the ending does not change. пло́щадь(square) ->на пло́щадь
Let's Practice with Verbs
The two most common verbs of motion are идти́ (to go on foot) and е́хать (to go by vehicle).
🚶 Идти́ (to go on foot, unidirectional)
я иду́
ты идёшь
он/она́ идёт
мы идём
вы идёте
они́ иду́т
🚗 Е́хать (to go by vehicle, unidirectional)
я е́ду
ты е́дешь
он/она́ е́дет
мы е́дем
вы е́дете
они́ е́дут
Putting It All Together: Example Sentences
✅ А́нна идёт в шко́лу. (Anna is walking to school.)
шко́лаis feminine, ends in -а ->шко́лу
✅Ива́н е́дет на рабо́ту.(Ivan is driving to work.)рабо́таis feminine, ends in -а ->рабо́ту
✅Мы идём в теа́тр.(We are walking to the theater.)теа́трis masculine, inanimate -> no change
