Using the Imperfect Subjunctive in Subordinate Clauses (Part 1)
Welcome to the Imperfect Subjunctive! 🧐
This tense is a crucial tool for expressing subjectivity—wishes, emotions, doubts, and hypothetical situations—but anchored in the past. If you've mastered the Present Subjunctive, you're already halfway there! The core logic is the same, but the timeline shifts.
The fundamental rule is often called the 'sequence of tenses'. It works like this:
➡️ If the main clause verb is in the past (Preterite, Imperfect) or the Conditional, and it triggers the subjunctive, the subordinate clause (the part after 'que') must use the Imperfect Subjunctive.
Let's break it down.
📜 How to Form the Imperfect Subjunctive
Fortunately, there's a reliable formula, even for irregular verbs!
1️⃣ Start with the Preterite: Take the 3rd person plural (ellos/ellas) form of the Preterite tense.
🔸 hablar ➞ hablaron
🔸 comer ➞ comieron
🔸 tener ➞ tuvieron (irregular!)
🔸 decir ➞ dijeron (irregular!)
2️⃣ Drop the '-ron': Remove the final '-ron' from that form.
🔸 habla-ron ➞ habla-
🔸 comie-ron ➞ comie-
🔸 tuvie-ron ➞ tuvie-
🔸 dije-ron ➞ dije-
3️⃣ Add the Endings: Attach one of the two sets of Imperfect Subjunctive endings. The '-ra' endings are much more common in everyday speech across the Spanish-speaking world, so we'll focus on those.
🔹 -ra Endings:
-ra
-ras
-ra
-ramos (Note the accent on the vowel before the 'r' for 'nosotros' forms: habláramos, comiéramos)
-rais
-ran
🔹 Example with 'hablar':
(yo) hablara
(tú) hablaras
(él/ella/Ud.) hablara
(nosotros) habláramos
(vosotros) hablarais
(ellos/ellas/Uds.) hablaran
🔹 Example with 'tener' (irregular):
(yo) tuviera
(tú) tuvieras
(él/ella/Ud.) tuviera
(nosotros) tuviéramos
...and so on.
🚀 When to Use It in Subordinate Clauses
We use it with the same triggers as the Present Subjunctive (often remembered by the WEIRDO acronym), but when the main verb is in a past tense.
🗣️ Wishes, Recommendations, Requests
🔸 Present: Te recomiendo que **leas** este libro. (I recommend that you read this book.)
🔸 Past: Te recomendé que **leyeras** este libro. (I recommended that you read this book.)
🔸 Present: Mis padres quieren que **estudie** medicina. (My parents want me to study medicine.)
🔸 Past: Mis padres querían que **estudiara** medicina. (My parents wanted me to study medicine.)
❤️ Emotions
🔸 Present: Me sorprende que no **sepas** la respuesta. (It surprises me that you don't know the answer.)
🔸 Past: Me sorprendió que no **supieras** la respuesta. (It surprised me that you didn't know the answer.)
🤔 Doubt, Denial, Uncertainty
🔸 Present: No creo que **sea** una buena idea. (I don't think it's a good idea.)
🔸 Past: No creía que **fuera** una buena idea. (I didn't think it was a good idea.)
⚖️ Impersonal Expressions
🔸 Present: Es necesario que **hables** con él. (It is necessary that you speak with him.)
🔸 Past: Era necesario que **hablaras** con él. (It was necessary that you speak with him.)
In essence, the Imperfect Subjunctive allows you to express a subjective viewpoint about an action that was happening or was supposed to happen in the past. This lesson covers its use in these 'noun clauses' that follow a main verb. In Part 2, we will explore its use in different grammatical structures.
