The Passive Voice with 'Ser'
Welcome to the lesson on the Passive Voice with 'Ser'. 🧐
In English, we form the passive voice to shift focus from the doer of an action to the recipient of that action. For example, instead of 'The author wrote the book' (active), we can say 'The book was written by the author' (passive). Spanish has a very similar structure, known as 'la voz pasiva con ser', which is primarily used in formal, written contexts.
➡️ The Core Formula
The fundamental structure for the passive voice with 'ser' is as follows:
Subject (recipient of the action) + SER (conjugated) + Past Participle + POR + Agent (doer of the action)
Let's analyze each component:
🔹 Subject: This is the noun that receives the action. In the corresponding active sentence, this noun would be the direct object.
Example: La novela (The novel)
🔹 SER (conjugated): The verb 'ser' is the auxiliary verb here. You must conjugate it to match the tense of the original action and agree in number (singular/plural) with the new subject.
Example: La novela fue... (The novel was...)
🔹 Past Participle: This verb describes the action performed. The most important rule to remember is that the past participle must agree in gender and number with the subject. It behaves just like an adjective.
Example: ...escrita. (written - feminine, singular to match la novela)
Here are more examples of agreement:
▪️ El poema fue escrito. (masculine, singular)
▪️ Las novelas fueron escritas. (feminine, plural)
▪️ Los poemas fueron escritos. (masculine, plural)
🔹 POR + Agent: The preposition 'por' introduces the agent—the person or thing that performs the action. This agent was the subject in the active sentence. This part of the sentence is optional and is often omitted if the agent is unknown, obvious, or unimportant.
Example: ...por el autor. (by the author)
Let's see the transformation from active to passive:
Active: El autor escribió la novela. (The author wrote the novel.)
Passive: La novela fue escrita por el autor. (The novel was written by the author.)
➡️ Usage in Different Tenses
To change the tense of a passive sentence, you only need to change the conjugation of the verb 'ser'. The past participle's form does not change (though its ending still must agree with the subject).
📌 Presente: Used for general truths or ongoing actions.
Las decisiones son tomadas por la junta directiva.
(The decisions are made by the board of directors.)
📌 Pretérito Indefinido: Used for completed actions in the past.
El edificio fue diseñado por un arquitecto famoso.
(The building was designed by a famous architect.)
📌 Pretérito Imperfecto: Describes ongoing, habitual, or background actions in the past.
Las pirámides eran construidas con una precisión increíble.
(The pyramids were built with incredible precision.)
📌 Futuro Simple:
El informe será presentado mañana.
(The report will be presented tomorrow.)
📌 Presente de Subjuntivo: As this is a B2 course, applying it in the subjunctive is key.
Es importante que la ley sea aprobada por todos.
(It's important that the law be approved by everyone.)
➡️ When to Use 'Voz Pasiva con Ser'
This passive construction lends a formal and objective tone. You will encounter it most frequently in:
▪️ News and Media: Los rehenes fueron liberados esta mañana. (The hostages were freed this morning.)
▪️ Historical and Academic Texts: La ciudad fue fundada en el siglo XVI. (The city was founded in the 16th century.)
▪️ Formal Announcements and Literature.
In everyday spoken Spanish, other constructions like the passive 'se' (e.g., Se habla español) are far more common. However, mastering the 'ser' passive is crucial for understanding formal written Spanish and for elevating your own writing. The most critical point is the gender and number agreement of the past participle with the subject. Always double-check it!
