Vocabulary Focus: Health, Wellness, and Expressing Opinions

Welcome to our lesson focusing on practical vocabulary. Having a rich vocabulary is the key to unlocking fluent, real-world conversations. In this session, we will explore two essential topics: 'Health and Wellness' and 'Expressing Opinions'. Mastering these areas will enable you to discuss your well-being with clarity and share your thoughts with greater confidence.

🧠 Let's begin!

🩺 Part 1: Health and Wellness (Salud y Bienestar)

Being able to talk about your health is a crucial skill, whether you are traveling, living abroad, or simply talking to friends. Here is some essential vocabulary.

➡️ Describing Symptoms and Illnesses (Describir síntomas y enfermedades):
Many common health issues are described using the verbs 'tener', 'estar', and 'sentirse'.

  • Using 'Tener' (to have) + noun:

  • Tengo fiebre. (I have a fever.)

  • Tengo tos. (I have a cough.)

  • Tengo dolor de cabeza / garganta / estómago. (I have a headache / sore throat / stomachache.)

  • Using 'Estar' (to be) + adjective to describe a condition:

  • Estoy resfriado/a. (I have a cold.)

  • Estoy mareado/a. (I feel dizzy.)

  • Estoy congestionado/a. (I am congested.)

  • Using 'Sentirse' (to feel) + adjective/adverb:

  • Me siento mal. (I feel sick.)

  • Me siento débil. (I feel weak.)

➡️ At the Doctor's and Pharmacy (En la consulta del médico y la farmacia) 💊

  • Pedir una cita con el médico. (To make a doctor's appointment.)
  • El médico me ha recetado un medicamento. (The doctor has prescribed me a medication.)
  • Necesito comprar unas pastillas para el dolor. (I need to buy some pills for the pain.)
  • El farmacéutico me recomendó un jarabe para la tos. (The pharmacist recommended a cough syrup.)

➡️ Promoting Wellness and Healthy Habits (Fomentar el bienestar y los hábitos saludables) 🏋️‍♀️

  • Para mantenerse sano, es importante... (To stay healthy, it is important to...)
  • ...hacer ejercicio regularmente. (...exercise regularly.)
  • ...llevar una dieta equilibrada. (...have a balanced diet.)
  • ...beber suficiente agua. (...drink enough water.)
  • ...dormir lo suficiente. (...get enough sleep.)
  • ...evitar el estrés. (...avoid stress.)

🗣️ Part 2: Expressing Opinions (Expresar Opiniones)

Sharing your point of view is essential for deeper communication. As you have learned throughout this course, the mood you choose (indicative or subjunctive) depends on the certainty of your statement. Let's review some key phrases.

➡️ Expressing Certainty (Uses the Indicative Mood):
When you state a belief or what you consider a fact, you use the indicative.

  • Creo que... / Pienso que... (I believe that... / I think that...)
Example: Creo que esta solución es la mejor. (I believe this solution is the best.)

  • Me parece que... (It seems to me that...)
Example: Me parece que el libro es muy interesante. (It seems to me that the book is very interesting.)

  • Other useful phrases: En mi opinión..., Para mí..., Desde mi punto de vista...

➡️ Expressing Doubt or Negation (Uses the Subjunctive Mood) 🤔
This is where your subjunctive skills are crucial! When you express doubt, denial, or uncertainty, you must switch to the subjunctive.

  • No creo que... / No pienso que... (+ Subjunctive)
Example: No creo que esta solución sea la mejor. (I don't believe this solution is the best.)

  • Dudo que... (+ Subjunctive)
Example: Dudo que él venga a la reunión. (I doubt that he will come to the meeting.)

  • No es seguro que... (+ Subjunctive)
Example: No es seguro que el plan funcione. (It is not certain that the plan will work.)

➡️ Agreeing and Disagreeing:

  • Estoy de acuerdo (contigo). (I agree (with you).)
  • No estoy de acuerdo. (I don't agree.)
  • Tienes razón. (You are right.)
  • Estás equivocado/a. (You are wrong.)
  • Pienso lo mismo que tú. (I think the same as you.)

By practicing this vocabulary, you will be well-equipped to handle conversations about health and to express your opinions with nuance and accuracy. ¡A practicar!
