Forming the Present Subjunctive: Irregular Verbs and Stem-Changers

In our previous lesson, we established the fundamental formula for forming the present subjunctive: start with the 'yo' form of the present indicative, remove the final -o, and add the opposite vowel endings (-e for -ar verbs, -a for -er/-ir verbs).

Today, we delve into the exceptions that make Spanish so dynamic: irregular verbs and stem-changing verbs.

🧠 Verbs with Irregular 'yo' Forms

A crucial principle of the subjunctive is that if a verb has an irregular 'yo' form in the present indicative, that irregular stem is used for all persons in the present subjunctive. The logic is consistent.

Let's take the verb tener (to have). Its 'yo' form is tengo.

  1. Start with tengo.
  2. Drop the -o to get the stem: teng-
  3. Add the subjunctive endings for an -er verb (-a, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an).

➡️ Conjugation for Tener:

  • que yo tenga
  • que tú tengas
  • que él/ella/Ud. tenga
  • que nosotros tengamos
  • que vosotros tengáis
  • que ellos/ellas/Uds. tengan

Many common verbs follow this pattern:
✅ hacer (hago) ➡️ haga
✅ poner (pongo) ➡️ ponga
✅ decir (digo) ➡️ diga
✅ venir (vengo) ➡️ venga
✅ salir (salgo) ➡️ salga
✅ oír (oigo) ➡️ oiga

💡 Stem-Changing Verbs
Stem-changing verbs also have specific patterns in the subjunctive.

🔵 -AR and -ER Verbs
These verbs follow the familiar 'boot' or 'shoe' pattern from the present indicative. The stem change (e.g., e → ie, o → ue) applies to all forms except for nosotros and vosotros.

  • Example (e → ie): pensar (to think) ➡️ piense, pienses, piense, pensemos, penséis, piensen.
  • Example (o → ue): poder (to be able) ➡️ pueda, puedas, pueda, podamos, podáis, puedan.

🟢 -IR Verbs
This is where a new pattern emerges. Stem-changing -ir verbs change in all forms, but the change in the nosotros and vosotros forms is different.

1️⃣ e → ie verbs, like sentir (to feel):
These change from e → ie inside the boot, and from e → i for nosotros/vosotros.

  • sentir ➡️ sienta, sientas, sienta, sintamos, sintáis, sientan.

2️⃣ e → i verbs, like pedir (to ask for):
This group is consistent. The stem changes from e → i in all forms.

  • pedir ➡️ pida, pidas, pida, pidamos, pidáis, pidan.

3️⃣ o → ue verbs, like dormir (to sleep):
These change from o → ue inside the boot, and from o → u for nosotros/vosotros.

  • dormir ➡️ duerma, duermas, duerma, durmamos, durmáis, duerman.

🍽️ The 'Super Irregulars': D.I.S.H.E.S.
Finally, a small group of essential verbs have unique, completely irregular forms that must be memorized. A popular mnemonic is DISHES.

  • Dar (to give): dé, des, dé, demos, deis, den
⚠️ Note the accent on dé to distinguish it from the preposition de.

  • Ir (to go): vaya, vayas, vaya, vayamos, vayáis, vayan

  • Ser (to be): sea, seas, sea, seamos, seáis, sean

  • Haber (to have, auxiliary): haya, hayas, haya, hayamos, hayáis, hayan

  • Estar (to be): esté, estés, esté, estemos, estéis, estén
⚠️ Note the accents on all forms except estemos.

  • Saber (to know): sepa, sepas, sepa, sepamos, sepáis, sepan

Mastering these irregular and stem-changing verbs is a significant step toward gaining confidence and fluency with the subjunctive mood.
