Vocabulary: Travel and Holidays

This lesson will equip you with essential vocabulary for planning, experiencing, and talking about your travels and holidays in Spanish. From booking your trip to exploring a new city, these words and phrases will be your trusted companions. 🗺️

✈️ Planning Your Trip (Planificando el viaje)
Every great adventure begins with a plan. Here are the key terms you'll need:

Nouns:
➡️ el destino - destination
➡️ el viaje - trip, journey
➡️ las vacaciones - holidays, vacation
➡️ el billete (de avión, de tren) - ticket (plane, train)
➡️ el pasaporte - passport
➡️ la reserva - booking, reservation
➡️ el alojamiento - accommodation
➡️ el hotel / el hostal / el apartamento - hotel / hostel / apartment
➡️ la maleta - suitcase
➡️ el equipaje - luggage

Verbs:
➡️ planificar - to plan
➡️ elegir - to choose
➡️ reservar - to book, to reserve
➡️ comprar - to buy
➡️ hacer la maleta - to pack the suitcase

Example: "Para mis próximas vacaciones, voy a reservar un hotel en la playa y comprar los billetes de avión." (For my next holidays, I'm going to book a hotel on the beach and buy the plane tickets.)

🚉 Getting Around (El transporte)
How you get there is part of the fun!

Places:
➡️ el aeropuerto - airport
➡️ la estación de tren / de autobuses - train / bus station
➡️ el puerto - port, harbor

Modes of Transport:
➡️ el avión - plane
➡️ el tren - train
➡️ el autobús - bus
➡️ el coche - car
➡️ el barco - boat, ship
➡️ el metro - metro, subway

Verbs:
➡️ viajar (en avión, en tren...) - to travel (by plane, by train...)
➡️ volar - to fly
➡️ conducir - to drive
➡️ tomar / coger - to take (Note: 'coger' is common in Spain, but can be vulgar in some parts of Latin America. 'Tomar' is universally safe.)

Example: "Prefiero viajar en tren porque puedo ver el paisaje." (I prefer to travel by train because I can see the landscape.)

🏨 At the Airport and Accommodation (En el aeropuerto y el alojamiento)
Once your journey is underway, you'll need this vocabulary.

At the Airport:
➡️ la facturación - check-in
➡️ la tarjeta de embarque - boarding pass
➡️ la puerta de embarque - boarding gate
➡️ el control de seguridad - security check
➡️ el vuelo - flight
➡️ despegar - to take off
➡️ aterrizar - to land

At the Hotel:
➡️ la recepción - reception
➡️ la habitación (individual / doble) - room (single / double)
➡️ la llave - key
➡️ hacer el check-in / el check-out - to check in / to check out

Example: "Después de aterrizar, fuimos al hotel para hacer el check-in y dejar las maletas en la habitación." (After landing, we went to the hotel to check in and leave the suitcases in the room.)

📸 Exploring and Activities (Explorando y actividades)
This is what holidays are all about!

Nouns:

Verbs & Activities:
➡️ visitar (un museo, una ciudad) - to visit (a museum, a city)
➡️ hacer turismo - to go sightseeing
➡️ explorar - to explore
➡️ sacar / tomar fotos - to take photos
➡️ nadar - to swim
➡️ tomar el sol - to sunbathe
➡️ probar la comida local - to try the local food
➡️ descansar - to rest
➡️ ir de compras - to go shopping

Example: "En nuestras vacaciones, nos encanta visitar monumentos históricos y probar la comida local." (On our holidays, we love to visit historical monuments and try the local food.)
