Simple Past (Pretérito Indefinido): Irregular Verbs Part 2

🇪🇸 Simple Past (Pretérito Indefinido): Irregular Verbs Part 2

In our previous lesson on the Pretérito Indefinido, we explored some of the most common and highly irregular verbs, such as ser, ir, tener, and hacer. Now, we will expand our knowledge by looking at another important category of irregulars: stem-changing verbs.

Unlike the Present Tense, where stem changes can occur in -ar, -er, and -ir verbs, in the Pretérito Indefinido, this phenomenon is much simpler.

👉 Key Rule: Stem changes in the Pretérito Indefinido only happen with -ir verbs. Furthermore, the change only occurs in the third-person forms: él/ella/usted and ellos/ellas/ustedes.

Let's break them down into two main groups.

1️⃣ Group 1: Vowel change e → i

For a specific group of -ir verbs, the 'e' in the stem changes to an 'i' in the third-person singular and plural forms. The other forms are conjugated like regular -ir verbs.

Common verbs in this group include:

  • pedir (to ask for, to order)
  • sentir (to feel, to regret)
  • seguir (to follow, to continue)
  • servir (to serve)
  • repetir (to repeat)
  • preferir (to prefer)
  • vestirse (to get dressed)

Let's see the verb pedir in action:

  • (yo) pedí
  • (tú) pediste
  • (él/ella/usted) pidió 👈 Note the change!
  • (nosotros/as) pedimos
  • (vosotros/as) pedisteis
  • (ellos/ellas/ustedes) pidieron 👈 Note the change!

✅ Examples:

  • Ayer, pedí una pizza para cenar. (Yesterday, I ordered a pizza for dinner.)
  • El cliente pidió la cuenta. (The customer asked for the bill.)
  • Ellos siguieron las instrucciones. (They followed the instructions.)

2️⃣ Group 2: Vowel change o → u

Similarly, two very common -ir verbs change their stem vowel from 'o' to 'u', again, only in the third-person singular and plural.

The verbs are:

  • dormir (to sleep)
  • morir (to die)

Let's look at the conjugation for dormir:

  • (yo) dormí
  • (tú) dormiste
  • (él/ella/usted) durmió 👈 Note the change!
  • (nosotros/as) dormimos
  • (vosotros/as) dormisteis
  • (ellos/ellas/ustedes) durmieron 👈 Note the change!

✅ Examples:

  • Anoche no dormí bien. (Last night I didn't sleep well.)
  • El bebé durmió por diez horas. (The baby slept for ten hours.)
  • Desafortunadamente, las plantas murieron. (Unfortunately, the plants died.)

3️⃣ The Special Case: dar and ver

Finally, we have two verbs that are irregular but very easy to remember: dar (to give) and ver (to see).

What makes them special? Their endings are the same as regular -er and -ir verbs in the Pretérito Indefinido, but with one crucial difference: they do not have any accent marks.

Here is the conjugation for dar (to give):

  • (yo) di
  • (tú) diste
  • (él/ella/usted) dio
  • (nosotros/as) dimos
  • (vosotros/as) disteis
  • (ellos/ellas/ustedes) dieron

And here is ver (to see), which follows the exact same pattern:

  • (yo) vi
  • (tú) viste
  • (él/ella/usted) vio
  • (nosotros/as) vimos
  • (vosotros/as) visteis
  • (ellos/ellas/ustedes) vieron

✅ Examples:

  • Te di mi número de teléfono. (I gave you my phone number.)
  • ¿Viste a Juan en la fiesta? (Did you see Juan at the party?)
  • Mis abuelos me dieron un regalo. (My grandparents gave me a gift.)

💡 Summary of Today's Lesson:

  • Stem-changing verbs in the Pretérito Indefinido are always -ir verbs.
  • The stem change (e → i or o → u) only happens in the él/ella and ellos/ellas forms.
  • The verbs dar and ver are irregular; they use regular -er/-ir endings but without any accent marks.

Mastering these groups will significantly improve your ability to talk about past events in Spanish. ¡Buen trabajo!
