Simple Past (Pretérito Indefinido): Irregular Verbs Part 1

Welcome to the next step in mastering the Pretérito Indefinido!

So far, we have focused on regular verbs, which follow predictable patterns. However, many of the most common Spanish verbs are irregular in this tense. The good news is that these irregular verbs often fall into groups that share their own patterns. In this lesson, we will tackle the first and most fundamental groups.

💡 A key feature of most irregular preterites is that they do not have written accents on their endings, which is a major difference from the regular forms.

📚 Group 1: The Identical Twins - Ser & Ir

In a unique feature of Spanish grammar, the verbs ser (to be) and ir (to go) have the exact same conjugation in the Pretérito Indefinido. You will always understand which verb is being used based on the context of the sentence.

Here is the conjugation for both verbs:
➡️ yo fui
➡️ tú fuiste
➡️ él/ella/usted fue
➡️ nosotros/as fuimos
➡️ vosotros/as fuisteis
➡️ ellos/ellas/ustedes fueron

Examples:
✅ Ayer fui al supermercado. (Yesterday I went to the supermarket.) - This is clearly the verb Ir.
✅ La película fue muy interesante. (The movie was very interesting.) - This is clearly the verb Ser.
✅ Ellos fueron a la playa el verano pasado. (They went to the beach last summer.) - Ir.

📚 Group 2: The Simple Pair - Dar & Ver

The verbs dar (to give) and ver (to see) are also irregular but are quite simple to learn. They take the standard endings for regular -er/-ir verbs, but crucially, they do not use any accents.

Conjugation for Dar (to give):
➡️ yo di
➡️ tú diste
➡️ él/ella/usted dio
➡️ nosotros/as dimos
➡️ vosotros/as disteis
➡️ ellos/ellas/ustedes dieron

Conjugation for Ver (to see):
➡️ yo vi
➡️ tú viste
➡️ él/ella/usted vio
➡️ nosotros/as vimos
➡️ vosotros/as visteis
➡️ ellos/ellas/ustedes vieron

Examples:
✅ Le di el libro a Juan. (I gave the book to Juan.)
✅ ¿Viste a mi hermano en la fiesta? (Did you see my brother at the party?)

📚 Group 3: The "Strong" Preterites (U-Stem Verbs)

This is a major group of irregular verbs. They are sometimes called "strong" preterites (pretéritos fuertes). They all share two key characteristics:

  1. They have an irregular stem in the preterite.
  2. They all use a special set of endings that have no accents.

Here are the unique endings for all strong preterite verbs:
🔸 yo: -e
🔸 tú: -iste
🔸 él/ella/usted: -o
🔸 nosotros/as: -imos
🔸 vosotros/as: -isteis
🔸 ellos/ellas/ustedes: -ieron

In this lesson, we will focus on the verbs whose irregular stem contains the letter 'u'.

🔹 Estar (to be) → Stem: estuv-
Yo estuve, tú estuviste, él estuvo, nosotros estuvimos, vosotros estuvisteis, ellos estuvieron.
Example: Ayer estuve en casa todo el día. (Yesterday I was at home all day.)

🔹 Tener (to have) → Stem: tuv-
Yo tuve, tú tuviste, él tuvo, nosotros tuvimos, vosotros tuvisteis, ellos tuvieron.
Example: Ella tuvo un examen muy difícil. (She had a very difficult exam.)

🔹 Poder (to be able/can) → Stem: pud-
Example: No pude terminar el trabajo a tiempo. (I couldn't finish the work on time.)

🔹 Poner (to put/place) → Stem: pus-
Example: Él puso los platos en la mesa. (He put the plates on the table.)

🔹 Saber (to know) → Stem: sup-
💡 In the preterite, saber often takes on the meaning 'to find out' or 'to discover'.
Example: Anoche supe que venías. (Last night I found out that you were coming.)

🔹 Andar (to walk) → Stem: anduv-
Example: Nosotros anduvimos por el centro de la ciudad. (We walked through the city center.)

Memorizing these groups is much more effective than learning each verb individually. In the next part, we will explore other groups of strong preterites.
