Imperfect Tense (Pretérito Imperfecto): Formation and Use

Welcome to our lesson on the Pretérito Imperfecto, or the Imperfect Tense!

This past tense is your key to painting vivid pictures of the past. While other past tenses focus on completed actions, the Imperfect describes ongoing situations, repeated habits, and the background scenery of a story. Think of it as setting the stage. In English, it often translates to "was/were + verb-ing" or "used to + verb".

Let's dive in! 🏊

✅ How to Form the Imperfect Tense

The great news is that the Imperfect is one of the easiest tenses to conjugate in Spanish!

There are only two sets of endings for regular verbs:

1️⃣ For -AR verbs (like hablar - to speak):
Remove the -ar ending and add these endings:

🔹 yo hablaba
🔹 tú hablabas
🔹 él/ella/usted hablaba
🔹 nosotros/as hablábamos (Note the accent on the 'a'!)
🔹 vosotros/as hablabais
🔹 ellos/ellas/ustedes hablaban

2️⃣ For -ER and -IR verbs (like comer - to eat, and vivir - to live):
Both verb groups share the same endings! Remove the -er or -ir and add:

🔹 yo comía / vivía
🔹 tú comías / vivías
🔹 él/ella/usted comía / vivía
🔹 nosotros/as comíamos / vivíamos
🔹 vosotros/as comíais / vivíais
🔹 ellos/ellas/ustedes comían / vivían

Notice that all these endings have an accent on the 'í'.

🤩 The Irregulars? Only Three!

Even better news! There are only three irregular verbs in the entire Imperfect tense. You'll master them in no time.

1. SER (to be)
▫️ yo era
▫️ tú eras
▫️ él/ella/usted era
▫️ nosotros/as éramos
▫️ vosotros/as erais
▫️ ellos/ellas/ustedes eran

2. IR (to go)
▫️ yo iba
▫️ tú ibas
▫️ él/ella/usted iba
▫️ nosotros/as íbamos
▫️ vosotros/as ibais
▫️ ellos/ellas/ustedes iban

3. VER (to see)
▫️ yo veía
▫️ tú veías
▫️ él/ella/usted veía
▫️ nosotros/as veíamos
▫️ vosotros/as veíais
▫️ ellos/ellas/ustedes veían

❓ When to Use the Imperfect Tense

Here are the main situations where you'll need the Imperfect, often remembered by the acronym WATERS or DATES:

🕰️ Habitual or Repeated Actions (Used to)
For actions that were a routine in the past.
▸ Cuando era niño, siempre visitábamos a mis abuelos los domingos. (When I was a child, we always used to visit my grandparents on Sundays.)

🖼️ Descriptions in the Past
To describe people, places, things, or the general setting.
▸ La casa era grande y tenía un jardín muy bonito. (The house was big and had a very beautiful garden.)
▸ Él llevaba una chaqueta azul. (He was wearing a blue jacket.)

⏳ Ongoing Actions (Background Info)
To describe an action that was in progress in the past, often when another, shorter action interrupted it.
▸ Yo leía un libro cuando sonó el teléfono. (I was reading a book when the phone rang.)

🌦️ Weather
To describe the weather in the past.
▸ Llovía mucho esa tarde. (It was raining a lot that afternoon.)

⏰ Time and Age
For telling time or stating someone's age in the past.
▸ Eran las cinco de la tarde. (It was five in the afternoon.)
▸ Mi hermana tenía diez años. (My sister was ten years old.)

🧠 Emotions and Mental States
To describe feelings, thoughts, or beliefs in the past.
▸ Yo estaba muy feliz. (I was very happy.)
▸ Pensaba que la idea era buena. (I thought the idea was good.)

In summary, use the Imperfect to describe the "background" of your story—what used to happen, what was going on, and what things were like. ¡Buen trabajo!
