Subject Pronouns and the Verb 'Ser' (to be)
Welcome to your first major step in Spanish grammar! 🇪🇸
This lesson covers two fundamental concepts: Subject Pronouns and the verb 'Ser' (to be). Mastering these will provide you with the essential tools to build basic sentences and describe yourself and the world around you.
🔵 Part 1: Subject Pronouns (Los Pronombres Personales)
In English, we use words like I, you, he, she, we, and they to show who is doing an action. These are subject pronouns. Spanish has them too, but with a few more details to consider.
Let's meet the Spanish subject pronouns:
👤 Singular Pronouns (one person)
➡️ yo - I
➡️ tú - you (This is the informal 'you'. Use it with friends, family, children, and people you know well.)
➡️ él - he
➡️ ella - she
➡️ usted (often abbreviated as Ud.) - you (This is the formal 'you'. Use it to show respect to older people, strangers, or in professional situations.)
👥 Plural Pronouns (more than one person)
➡️ nosotros / nosotras - we
- Use
nosotrosfor a group of men or a mixed-gender group. - Use
nosotrasonly for a group of all women.
➡️ vosotros / vosotras - you all (plural)
- This is the informal plural 'you', primarily used in Spain.
vosotrosis for a group of men or a mixed group;vosotrasis for a group of all women.
➡️ ellos / ellas - they
ellosis for a group of men or a mixed group.ellasis for a group of all women.
➡️ ustedes (often abbreviated as Uds.) - you all (plural)
- In Latin America,
ustedesis the standard way to say 'you all', for both formal and informal situations. - In Spain,
ustedesis only used as the formal plural 'you'.
💡 A Key Difference from English:
In Spanish, it's very common to drop the subject pronoun! This is because the ending of the verb changes to show who is doing the action. For example, instead of saying "Yo soy alto" (I am tall), you can simply say "Soy alto." The context and the verb form soy make it clear you are talking about 'I'.
🔵 Part 2: The Verb 'Ser' (to be)
Spanish has two verbs that mean 'to be': Ser and Estar. Today, we focus on Ser.
We use Ser for permanent states or characteristics—things that define the essence of a person or object. A helpful way to remember when to use Ser is the acronym D.O.C.T.O.R.:
✅ Description - To describe the essential qualities of a person or thing.
- Example:
Mi casa es grande.(My house is big.) - Example:
Tú eres inteligente.(You are intelligent.)
✅ Occupation - To state someone's job or profession.
- Example:
Él es médico.(He is a doctor.)
✅ Characteristic - To describe personality traits.
- Example:
Nosotros somos amables.(We are kind.)
✅ Time - To state the day, date, or time.
- Example:
Hoy es martes.(Today is Tuesday.) - Example:
Son las dos.(It is two o'clock.)
✅ Origin - To say where someone or something is from.
- Example:
Yo soy de Canadá.(I am from Canada.)
✅ Relationship - To describe relationships between people.
- Example:
Ella es mi madre.(She is my mother.)
🔵 Part 3: Putting It All Together - Conjugating 'Ser'
'Conjugation' means changing the verb to match the subject. Here is the present tense conjugation for Ser:
yo ➡️ soy (I am)
tú ➡️ eres (you are)
él / ella / usted ➡️ es (he is / she is / you are)
nosotros / nosotras ➡️ somos (we are)
vosotros / vosotras ➡️ sois (you all are - Spain)
ellos / ellas / ustedes ➡️ son (they are / you all are)
Let's see some complete sentences:
Yo soy de Londres.(I am from London.)Tú eres un buen amigo.(You are a good friend.)Usted es el profesor.(You are the professor.)Nosotras somos hermanas.(We are sisters.)Ellos son altos.(They are tall.)Ustedes son estudiantes.(You all are students.)
By combining the correct subject pronoun with the correct form of Ser, you can now form your first descriptive sentences in Spanish. ¡Excelente!
