Forming Questions and Question Words
Asking questions is a fundamental part of communication. In Spanish, there are a few straightforward ways to do this, both for simple 'yes/no' questions and for more detailed inquiries.
❓ Forming Yes/No Questions
There are two primary methods to turn a statement into a question that can be answered with 'yes' or 'no'.
1️⃣ Using Intonation
The simplest way is to take a declarative sentence and change your intonation, raising the pitch of your voice at the end. In writing, this is indicated by placing question marks at both the beginning (¿) and the end (?) of the sentence. This is a very common method in spoken Spanish.
👉 Statement: Tú hablas español. (You speak Spanish.)
👉 Question: ¿Tú hablas español? (Do you speak Spanish?)
👉 Statement: Ella come manzanas. (She eats apples.)
👉 Question: ¿Ella come manzanas? (Does she eat apples?)
2️⃣ Inverting Subject and Verb
A slightly more formal way to ask a yes/no question is to invert the order of the subject and the verb. You place the verb before the subject.
👉 Statement: Usted trabaja aquí. (You work here.)
👉 Question: ¿Trabaja usted aquí? (Do you work here?)
👉 Statement: Los niños juegan en el parque. (The children play in the park.)
👉 Question: ¿Juegan los niños en el parque? (Do the children play in the park?)
Important Note: Spanish does not use auxiliary verbs like 'do' or 'does' to form questions. The main verb itself is used.
❓ Using Question Words (Interrogatives)
To ask for specific information (not just a 'yes' or 'no'), you need to use question words, known as pronombres interrogativos. These words always have a written accent mark to distinguish them from their non-interrogative counterparts.
Here are the most common question words:
🔹 ¿Qué? - What?
Used to ask for a definition or explanation.
✅ ¿Qué es eso? - What is that?
✅ ¿Qué estudias? - What do you study?
🔹 ¿Quién? / ¿Quiénes? - Who?
Use ¿Quién? for a single person and ¿Quiénes? for multiple people.
✅ ¿Quién es tu profesor? - Who is your teacher?
✅ ¿Quiénes son ellos? - Who are they?
🔹 ¿Cuándo? - When?
Used to ask about time.
✅ ¿Cuándo es la fiesta? - When is the party?
🔹 ¿Dónde? - Where?
Used to ask about location.
✅ ¿Dónde está el baño? - Where is the bathroom?
🔹 ¿Por qué? - Why?
Used to ask for a reason. The answer often starts with porque (one word, no accent), which means 'because'.
✅ ¿Por qué estudias español? - Why do you study Spanish?
➡️ Answer: Porque me gusta. - Because I like it.
🔹 ¿Cómo? - How?
Used to ask about the manner or way something is done. It is also used in the common greeting ¿Cómo estás? (How are you?).
✅ ¿Cómo te llamas? - What is your name? (Literally: How do you call yourself?)
🔹 ¿Cuál? / ¿Cuáles? - Which? / What?
Used when choosing from a set of options, even if the options aren't explicitly stated. Use ¿Cuál? for singular and ¿Cuáles? for plural.
✅ ¿Cuál es tu color favorito? - What is your favorite color?
✅ ¿Cuáles son tus libros? - Which are your books?
🔹 ¿Cuánto? / ¿Cuánta? / ¿Cuántos? / ¿Cuántas? - How much? / How many?
This question word must agree in gender and number with the noun it refers to.
➡️ ¿Cuánto? (masculine singular)
➡️ ¿Cuánta? (feminine singular)
➡️ ¿Cuántos? (masculine plural)
➡️ ¿Cuántas? (feminine plural)
✅ ¿Cuánto cuesta? - How much does it cost?
✅ ¿Cuántos años tienes? - How old are you? (Literally: How many years do you have?)
Remember, every written question in Spanish must start with an inverted question mark (¿) and end with a standard one (?). This is a key rule of Spanish punctuation!
