Reported Speech and Indirect Questions
Welcome to the lesson on Reported Speech (Косвенная речь) and Indirect Questions.
This skill is essential for narrating events, sharing conversations, and making your Russian sound more fluid and advanced. We will cover how to report statements, questions, and commands.
➡️ Reporting Statements (Утвердительные предложения)
When you report what someone said, you use the conjunction что (that). The main task is to correctly change the pronouns and possessive adjectives from the original speaker's point of view to yours.
📌 Direct Speech: Анна сказала: "Я читаю интересную книгу".
(Anna said: "I am reading an interesting book".)
✅ Reported Speech: Анна сказала, что она читает интересную книгу.
(Anna said that she is reading an interesting book.)
📌 Direct Speech: Иван сказал: "Мой друг поможет мне завтра".
(Ivan said: "My friend will help me tomorrow".)
✅ Reported Speech: Иван сказал, что его друг поможет ему завтра.
(Ivan said that his friend will help him tomorrow.)
❗ Important Note on Tenses: Unlike English, Russian often does not require backshifting of tenses in reported speech, especially when the action is still relevant. If someone says "Я занят" (I am busy), you would report it as "Он сказал, что он занят" (He said that he is busy), not "...что он был занят" (...that he was busy), unless the state of being busy is firmly in the past.
➡️ Reporting Questions (Вопросительные предложения)
How you report a question depends on its type.
1️⃣ Yes/No Questions
For questions that can be answered with "да" or "нет", we use the particle ли (if/whether). This particle is placed immediately after the word that is the focus of the question (usually the verb or predicate).
📌 Direct Question: "Ты был в театре?"
(Were you at the theater?)
✅ Indirect Question: Он спросил, был ли я в театре.
(He asked if I had been to the theater.)
📌 Direct Question: "Эта задача сложная?"
(Is this task difficult?)
✅ Indirect Question: Я хотел узнать, сложная ли эта задача.
(I wanted to know if this task is difficult.)
2️⃣ Wh-Questions (Вопросы с вопросительным словом)
For questions starting with words like кто, что, где, когда, почему, как, какой, etc., the question word itself acts as the conjunction. No extra words are needed.
📌 Direct Question: "Где находится ближайшая аптека?"
(Where is the nearest pharmacy?)
✅ Indirect Question: Турист спросил, где находится ближайшая аптека.
(The tourist asked where the nearest pharmacy is.)
📌 Direct Question: "Почему ты не пришёл вчера?"
(Why didn't you come yesterday?)
✅ Indirect Question: Она спросила, почему я не пришёл вчера.
(She asked why I hadn't come yesterday.)
➡️ Reporting Commands, Requests, and Advice (Побудительные предложения)
This is a special case that requires the conjunction чтобы and a specific verb form. This structure is used to report orders, requests, suggestions, or advice.
❗️ The Rule: Use the verb чтобы followed by the main verb in the PAST TENSE. This is true even if the original command was in the imperative mood.
📌 Direct Command: "Позвони мне вечером!"
(Call me in the evening!)
✅ Reported Command: Он попросил, чтобы я позвонил(а) ему вечером.
(He asked me to call him in the evening. Lit: He asked that I called him...)
📌 Direct Advice: "Вам следует больше отдыхать".
(You should rest more.)
✅ Reported Advice: Врач посоветовал, чтобы я больше отдыхал(а).
(The doctor advised that I should rest more.)
By mastering these three structures (using что, ли/question words, and чтобы), you will be able to accurately report any kind of speech in Russian.
