Verbs of Motion: Unprefixed vs. Prefixed
Welcome to our lesson on Russian Verbs of Motion! You have likely mastered the basic pairs, but now we will explore how prefixes transform them entirely.
▶️ Part 1: A Quick Recap of Unprefixed Verbs
Remember the fundamental distinction from level A2? It's all about directionality.
🚶 Идти / Ходить (to go on foot)
🚗 Ехать / Ездить (to go by transport)
➡️ Unidirectional Verbs (Идти, Ехать):
These describe movement in one specific direction, at a specific moment in time. It's a single, continuous trip.
▪️ Я иду в магазин. (I am going to the store right now.)
▪️ Мы едем в Москву. (We are on our way to Moscow.)
🔄 Multidirectional Verbs (Ходить, Ездить):
These describe movement in multiple directions, a round trip, a habitual action, or the general ability to move.
▪️ Я хожу в спортзал каждый день. (I go to the gym every day - habitual, round trip).
▪️ Ребёнок уже ходит? (Can the child walk yet? - general ability).
▪️ Вчера мы ездили на дачу. (Yesterday we went to the dacha - implies a round trip, we went there and came back).
This distinction is the foundation. Now, let's add prefixes and see how everything changes.
▶️ Part 2: The Magic of Prefixes
In Russian, a prefix is a small part added to the beginning of a verb to change its meaning. For verbs of motion, prefixes add specific spatial information (arrival, departure, crossing, etc.).
Here are some common prefixes:
🔸 при- (arrival)
🔸 у- (departure, leaving)
🔸 в(о)- (entering)
🔸 вы- (exiting)
🔸 под(о)- (approaching)
🔸 от(о)- (moving away from)
🔸 до- (reaching, up to)
🔸 пере- (crossing)
💡 The Golden Rule: When you add a prefix to a verb of motion, the old logic of 'unidirectional vs. multidirectional' is replaced by a new logic: Perfective vs. Imperfective Aspect.
This is the most important concept of this lesson!
✅ Prefixed Multidirectional Verbs (from ходить, ездить) become IMPERFECTIVE.
They describe a process, a repeated action, or an incomplete action.
✅ Prefixed Unidirectional Verbs (from идти, ехать) become PERFECTIVE.
They describe a single, completed action with a result.
Let's see this in action with the prefix при- (arrival):
🔹 Base Pair: ходить (multi) / идти (uni)
🔹 Prefixed Pair: приходить (Imperfective) / прийти (Perfective)
🔸 Приходить (Imperfective):
Он обычно приходит домой в семь часов. (He usually comes home at 7 o'clock.) - Repeated action.
🔸 Прийти (Perfective):
Вчера он пришёл домой в семь часов. (Yesterday he came home at 7 o'clock.) - Single, completed action with a result (he is home).
Let's try with transport and the prefix у- (departure):
🔹 Base Pair: ездить (multi) / ехать (uni)
🔹 Prefixed Pair: уезжать (Imperfective) / уехать (Perfective)
(Note: ездить often changes to -езжать with a prefix)
🔸 Уезжать (Imperfective):
Каждое лето они уезжают на море. (Every summer they go away to the sea.) - Repeated action.
🔸 Уехать (Perfective):
Наконец-то они уехали на море! (They have finally left for the sea!) - Single, completed action with a result (they are gone).
▶️ Summary Table for Reference
| Prefix | Imperfective (Process/Habit) | Perfective (Result/One-time) |
|---|---|---|
| при- | приходить, приезжать | прийти, приехать |
| у- | уходить, уезжать | уйти, уехать |
| в- | входить, въезжать | войти, въехать |
| вы- | выходить, выезжать | выйти, выехать |
| до- | доходить, доезжать | дойти, доехать |
To master this topic, you must internalize this shift in logic:
❌ Without Prefix: Think Direction (One-way vs. Round Trip)
✅ With Prefix: Think Aspect (Process vs. Result)
