Comparative and Superlative Adjectives
In today's lesson, we will explore how to compare things in Russian. This is done using the comparative and superlative degrees of adjectives. Let's learn how to say that something is 'bigger', 'smarter', or 'the most beautiful'.
🌟 Comparative Degree (Сравнительная степень)
We use the comparative degree when we compare two objects, people, or ideas. For instance, "My car is faster than your car." In Russian, there are two ways to form comparatives: a simple form and a compound form.
1️⃣ The Simple Form (Простая форма)
This is the most common form used in everyday speech. It’s very practical!
➡️ How to form it:
Take the stem of the adjective (remove the ending like -ый, -ая, -ое) and add the suffix -ее or -ей. Both suffixes are correct and interchangeable, but -ее is more common today.
✅ Examples:
🔹 красивый (beautiful) → красивее (more beautiful)
🔹 интересный (interesting) → интереснее (more interesting)
🔹 новый (new) → новее (newer)
❗️ Important consonant changes:
For some adjectives, especially those with short stems, you add the suffix -е, and the last consonant of the stem changes. It is essential to memorize these common changes:
🔸 г, д, з → ж
▫️ дорогой (expensive) → дороже
▫️ молодой (young) → моложе
▫️ низкий (low) → ниже
🔸 к, т, х → ч, щ
▫️ громкий (loud) → громче
▫️ богатый (rich) → богаче
▫️ простой (simple) → проще
▫️ тихий (quiet) → тише
🔥 Irregular Forms (Исключения):
Just like in English ('good' → 'better'), Russian has a few very important irregular adjectives. You must learn them by heart:
▫️ хороший (good) → лучше (better)
▫️ плохой (bad) → хуже (worse)
▫️ большой (big) → больше (bigger)
▫️ маленький (small) → меньше (smaller)
▫️ старый (old) → старше (older, for people's age) / старее (older, for objects)
👉 How to use it in a sentence:
To compare two things, use the word чем (than). The simple comparative form never changes its ending.
▫️ Москва больше, чем Санкт-Петербург. (Moscow is bigger than Saint Petersburg.)
▫️ Мой брат старше, чем я. (My brother is older than me.)
2️⃣ The Compound Form (Составная форма)
This form is considered more formal or bookish. It is formed using the words более (more) or менее (less).
➡️ How to form it:
более / менее + the full adjective (in its initial form, agreeing in gender, number, and case with the noun it describes).
✅ Examples:
🔹 Этот текст более трудный. (This text is more difficult.)
🔹 Это менее интересная книга. (This is a less interesting book.)
🏆 Superlative Degree (Превосходная степень)
We use the superlative degree to say that something has the highest quality in a group, i.e., it is 'the most ___'. For example, "Everest is the highest mountain in the world."
The most common and practical way to form the superlative is the compound form.
1️⃣ The Compound Form (Составная форма) — Most common!
This is the form you will use in almost all situations.
➡️ How to form it:
самый / самая / самое / самые + the full adjective.
The word самый works like an adjective and must agree in gender, number, and case with the noun.
✅ Examples:
🔹 Байкал – самое глубокое озеро в мире. (Baikal is the deepest lake in the world.)
🔹 Это самый интересный фильм, который я видел. (This is the most interesting film I have seen.)
🔹 Она купила самую красивую машину. (She bought the most beautiful car.)
2️⃣ The Simple Form (Простая форма) — More formal
This form is mostly used in literature, journalism, or for adding emphasis. It can often be translated as 'the most' or 'extremely'.
➡️ How to form it:
Add the suffix -ейш- or -айш- (after к, г, х) to the adjective stem.
✅ Examples:
▫️ великий (great) → величайший (the greatest)
▫️ интересный (interesting) → интереснейший (the most interesting)
🎯 Summary for everyday use:
🔹 To say 'more ... than', use: [Adjective in simple comparative form] + чем. (e.g., лучше, чем)
🔹 To say 'the most ...', use: самый/самая/самое + [Adjective]. (e.g., самый лучший)
