Introduction to Russian Nouns: Gender and Plural

Welcome to your first step in mastering Russian nouns!
In Russian, every single noun—whether it's a person, place, or thing—has a grammatical gender. It can be Masculine, Feminine, or Neuter. This concept is crucial because other words in a sentence, like adjectives, will change their form to match the noun's gender.

Don't worry, you don't have to guess! You can almost always tell a noun's gender just by looking at its last letter.

Let's break it down:

👨‍🔧 Masculine Gender (Мужской род)
Most masculine nouns end in:

  1. A consonant.
    → стол (stol) - table
    → телефон (telefon) - telephone
  2. The letter -й.
    → музей (muzey) - museum
    → чай (chay) - tea
  3. A soft sign -ь (less common, you will learn to recognize them).
→ учитель (uchitel') - teacher (male)
    → словарь (slovar') - dictionary

👩‍🔬 Feminine Gender (Женский род)
Most feminine nouns end in:

  1. The letter -а.
    → книга (kniga) - book
    → машина (mashina) - car
  2. The letter -я.
    → песня (pesnya) - song
    → семья (sem'ya) - family
  3. A soft sign -ь (more common for feminine than masculine).
    → ночь (noch') - night
    → дверь (dver') - door

🏢 Neuter Gender (Средний род)
Most neuter nouns end in:

  1. The letter -о.
    → окно (okno) - window
    → письмо (pis'mo) - letter
  2. The letter -е.
    → море (more) - sea
    → здание (zdaniye) - building

So, the key is to look at the very last letter of the noun in its dictionary form.

Great! Now that we can identify a noun's gender, let's learn how to make it plural. The plural form (Множественное число) also depends on the noun's ending.

Here are the basic rules:

📜 Plural of Masculine Nouns

  • If it ends in a consonant, add -ы.
    → стол → столы (stoly - tables)
  • If it ends in -й or -ь, replace it with -и.
    → музей → музеи (muzei - museums)
    → словарь → словари (slovari - dictionaries)

📜 Plural of Feminine Nouns

  • If it ends in -а, replace it with -ы.
    → комната → комнаты (komnaty - rooms)
  • If it ends in -я or -ь, replace it with -и.
    → песня → песни (pesni - songs)
    → ночь → ночи (nochi - nights)

📜 Plural of Neuter Nouns

  • If it ends in -о, replace it with -а.
    → окно → окна (okna - windows)
  • If it ends in -е, replace it with -я.
    → море → моря (morya - seas)

❗️ An Important Spelling Rule:
In Russian, you can never write the letter 'ы' after these 7 letters: г, к, х, ж, ч, ш, щ.
If a rule tells you to add -ы, but the stem ends in one of these letters, you must use -и instead.
For example:
→ книга (kniga - book) is feminine. The rule says to change -а to -ы. But the stem ends in 'г', so we use -и.
Correct: книги (knigi - books).
→ врач (vrach - doctor) is masculine. The rule says to add -ы. But it ends in 'ч', so we add -и.
Correct: врачи (vrachi - doctors).

This might seem like a lot at once, but these rules are your foundation for building correct Russian sentences. Practice identifying the gender and forming the plural of new words you learn. You've got this! 🚀
