Complex Sentences: Temporal and Modal Clauses

Welcome to our lesson on complex sentences. We will now explore two essential types of subordinate clauses (Nebensätze): Temporal Clauses and Modal Clauses. These clauses add crucial details about when (temporal) and how (modal) an action takes place, allowing you to express more complex and nuanced ideas in German.

📌 A quick reminder of the golden rule for all subordinate clauses: the conjugated verb is always placed at the very end of the clause.

🕰️ Temporalsätze (Temporal Clauses)
Temporal clauses answer the question 'Wann?' (When?). They specify the time relationship between the action in the main clause (Hauptsatz) and the action in the subordinate clause (Nebensatz).

➡️ Simultaneity (Gleichzeitigkeit): Actions happening at the same time.

🔹 während (while, during)
Used for two actions occurring simultaneously over a period of time.
Beispiel: Ich höre Musik, während ich das Abendessen koche. (I listen to music while I cook dinner.)

🔹 als vs. wenn (when)
This distinction is crucial for fluency:
✅ als: Use for a single, specific event or a completed period of time in the past.
Beispiel: Als ich gestern in der Stadt war, habe ich einen alten Freund getroffen. (When I was in the city yesterday, I met an old friend.)
✅ wenn: Use for repeated actions in the past, present, or future, AND for a single event in the present or future.
Beispiel (repeated): Immer wenn es regnete, lasen wir ein Buch. (Whenever it rained, we read a book.)
Beispiel (future): Sag mir Bescheid, wenn du bereit bist. (Let me know when you are ready.)

🔹 solange (as long as)
Indicates that two actions occur for the same length of time.
Beispiel: Du kannst mein Auto benutzen, solange ich im Urlaub bin. (You can use my car as long as I am on vacation.)

🔹 seit/seitdem (since)
Describes an action that began in the past and continues into the present.
Beispiel: Seitdem sie Deutsch lernt, hat sie viel mehr Selbstvertrauen. (Since she has been learning German, she has much more self-confidence.)

➡️ Anteriority (Vorzeitigkeit): The Nebensatz action happens before the Hauptsatz action.

🔹 nachdem (after)
This conjunction follows a strict tense rule (Tempusfolge), which is a key B2 topic.
📌 Rule: If the main clause is in Präsens/Perfekt, the nachdem-clause must be in Perfekt. If the main clause is in Präteritum, the nachdem-clause must be in Plusquamperfekt.
Beispiel: Nachdem ich die E-Mail geschrieben habe, schicke ich sie ab. (After I have written the email, I will send it.)
Beispiel: Nachdem er angekommen war, rief er seine Familie an. (After he had arrived, he called his family.)

➡️ Posteriority (Nachzeitigkeit): The Nebensatz action happens after the Hauptsatz action.

🔹 bevor / ehe (before)
These two conjunctions are synonyms. The tenses in both clauses are usually the same.
Beispiel: Man sollte nachdenken, bevor man spricht. (One should think before one speaks.)

🛠️ Modalsätze (Modal Clauses)
Modal clauses describe the manner, method, or circumstances of an action. They answer questions like 'Wie?' (How?) or 'Auf welche Weise?' (In what way?).

➡️ Instrumental (describing the means)

🔹 indem (by doing something)
This clause explains how the action in the main clause is performed or achieved.
Beispiel: Er hält sich fit, indem er jeden Tag joggen geht. (He keeps fit by going jogging every day.)

➡️ Alternative & Negative Conditions

🔹 (an)statt dass / (an)statt...zu + Infinitiv (instead of)
✅ Use (an)statt...zu + Infinitiv when the subject in both clauses is the same.
Beispiel: Er sieht fern, anstatt seine Hausaufgaben zu machen. (He watches TV instead of doing his homework.)
✅ Use (an)statt dass when the subjects are different.
Beispiel: Anstatt dass sie ihm die Wahrheit sagt, erfindet sie eine Ausrede. (Instead of her telling him the truth, she makes up an excuse.)

🔹 ohne dass / ohne...zu + Infinitiv (without)
✅ Use ohne...zu + Infinitiv when the subject is the same for both actions.
Beispiel: Er hat die Prüfung bestanden, ohne viel zu lernen. (He passed the exam without studying much.)
✅ Use ohne dass when the subjects are different.
Beispiel: Der Sturm begann, ohne dass wir eine Warnung erhalten hatten. (The storm began without us having received a warning.)

➡️ Comparative (showing a proportional relationship)

🔹 je...desto / je...umso (the...the...)
This special structure highlights how two things change in relation to each other. The word order is unique!
📌 Rule: Je + Comparative + ..., Verb. Desto/Umso + Comparative + Verb + Subject...
Beispiel: Je mehr man liest, desto größer wird der Wortschatz. (The more one reads, the bigger one's vocabulary becomes.)
Beispiel: Je länger die Reise dauerte, umso müder wurden die Passagiere. (The longer the journey lasted, the more tired the passengers became.)
