Advanced Comparisons: 'je...desto' and more
Welcome to our lesson on advanced comparative structures in German. Today, we will move beyond simple comparisons like 'größer als' and explore more nuanced ways to express relationships between things, focusing on the powerful 'je... desto' construction and hypothetical comparisons.
➡️ Proportional Comparisons: 'je... desto' / 'je... umso'
This structure is used to show that two things change in proportion to each other. In English, this is expressed as 'the... the...', for example, 'The more, the merrier.'
💡 The Structure:
'Je' introduces a subordinate clause (Nebensatz), and 'desto' or 'umso' introduces the main clause (Hauptsatz).
Je + Komparativ (+ Subjekt + ...), desto/umso + Komparativ + finites Verb + Subjekt + ...
Let's break it down:
1️⃣ The 'je'-clause: This is a subordinate clause. This means the conjugated verb goes to the very end of the clause.
Example: Je mehr man *übt*... (The more one practices...)
2️⃣ The 'desto'/'umso'-clause: This is the main clause. It begins with 'desto' or 'umso' followed immediately by the comparative adjective/adverb. This causes an inversion, meaning the conjugated verb comes directly after the comparative, in the second position.
Example: ...desto besser *wird* man. (...the better one becomes.)
✅ Putting it all together:
Je mehr man übt, desto besser wird man.
Je länger du schläfst, desto ausgeruhter fühlst du dich. (The longer you sleep, the more rested you feel.)
Je schneller wir fahren, umso früher kommen wir an. (The faster we drive, the earlier we will arrive.)
Note: 'desto' and 'umso' are completely interchangeable. 'Desto' is slightly more common in written German, but both are correct.
➡️ Hypothetical Comparisons: 'als ob' / 'als wenn' / 'als'
These structures are used to make comparisons to hypothetical or unreal situations. They translate to 'as if' or 'as though' and require the use of the Konjunktiv II (subjunctive mood).
💡 The Structure with 'als ob' or 'als wenn':
These conjunctions introduce a subordinate clause, so the conjugated verb is sent to the end.
Hauptsatz + , + als ob/als wenn + ... + Konjunktiv II Verb.
✅ Examples:
Er redet so, als ob er alles *wüsste*. (He talks as if he knew everything.)
Sie tat so, als wenn sie mich nicht *gesehen hätte*. (She acted as if she hadn't seen me.)
Es sieht so aus, als ob es bald *regnen würde*. (It looks as if it is going to rain soon.)
💡 The Shortened Structure with 'als':
You can also express the same idea by using only 'als'. When you do this, the structure changes. 'Als' is followed immediately by the conjugated Konjunktiv II verb (inversion), similar to the 'desto'-clause.
Hauptsatz + , + als + Konjunktiv II Verb + ...
✅ Examples:
Er redet so, als *wüsste* er alles.
Sie tat so, als *hätte* sie mich nicht gesehen.
Es sieht so aus, als *würde* es bald regnen.
This second structure with 'als' is often considered more elegant and is very common in both spoken and written German at the B2 level and above.
Mastering these comparative structures will significantly enhance the sophistication and precision of your German expression.
