Vocabulary: Expressing Opinions and Arguments
🗣️ Welcome to our lesson on Expressing Opinions and Arguments!
Mastering this skill is essential for everyday conversations, discussions, and especially for the B1 exams (both speaking and writing parts). It allows you to participate actively and share your perspective confidently. Let's explore the key phrases you'll need.
🤔 Ihre Meinung äußern – Expressing Your Opinion
Here are some of the most common ways to introduce your point of view. Pay close attention to the word order!
➡️ With normal word order (Verb in 2nd position):
🔹 Meiner Meinung nach... (In my opinion...)
Beispiel: "Meiner Meinung nach ist das eine gute Lösung."
🔹 Ich glaube / Ich finde / Ich meine... (I believe / I find / I mean...)
Beispiel: "Ich finde, dieser Film ist sehr langweilig." (Note: If you add 'dass', the verb moves to the end! See below.)
➡️ With a subordinate clause (Verb at the end):
🔹 Ich bin der Meinung/Ansicht, dass... (I am of the opinion that...)
Beispiel: "Ich bin der Ansicht, dass man mehr reisen sollte."
🔹 Ich finde, dass... (I find that...)
Beispiel: "Ich finde, dass die öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel zu teuer sind."
🔹 Ich bin davon überzeugt, dass... (I am convinced that...)
Beispiel: "Ich bin davon überzeugt, dass Deutschlernen Spaß macht."
👍 Zustimmen – Agreeing
When you share someone's opinion, you can use these phrases:
✅ Ich stimme dir/Ihnen (vollkommen) zu. (I (completely) agree with you.)
✅ Das sehe ich auch so. / Das sehe ich genauso. (I see it that way too. / I see it exactly the same way.)
✅ Du hast/Sie haben (völlig) recht. (You are (completely) right.)
✅ Genau! / Richtig! (Exactly! / Right!)
✅ Das ist ein guter Punkt. (That's a good point.)
👎 Widersprechen – Disagreeing
Disagreeing politely is a very important communication skill. Instead of saying "Das ist falsch" (That is wrong), try these more diplomatic options:
🟡 Polite & Indirect Disagreement:
🔹 Ich bin da anderer Meinung. (I have a different opinion on that.)
🔹 Ich sehe das (etwas) anders. (I see that (a bit) differently.)
🔹 Das stimmt zwar, aber... (That may be true, but...)
Beispiel: "Das stimmt zwar, aber man muss auch die Kosten bedenken."
🔹 Ich verstehe Ihren Standpunkt, jedoch... (I understand your point of view, however...)
🔹 Einerseits..., andererseits... (On the one hand..., on the other hand...)
Beispiel: "Einerseits ist das Auto bequem, andererseits schadet es der Umwelt."
🔗 Argumente verbinden und strukturieren – Connecting and Structuring Arguments
To make your arguments flow logically, use linking words (Konjunktionen).
➡️ Giving Reasons:
🔹 ..., weil... (because - verb moves to the end)
Beispiel: "Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich in Deutschland arbeiten möchte."
🔹 ..., denn... (because - normal word order, verb in position 2)
Beispiel: "Ich lerne Deutsch, denn ich möchte in Deutschland arbeiten."
➡️ Adding more points:
🔹 Außerdem... (Moreover...)
🔹 Darüber hinaus... (Furthermore...)
🔹 Zusätzlich... (Additionally...)
➡️ Showing Contrast or Consequence:
🔹 Deshalb / Deswegen... (Therefore / That's why...)
🔹 Trotzdem... (Nevertheless / Despite that...)
➡️ Concluding:
🔹 Zusammenfassend kann man sagen, dass... (In summary, one can say that...)
🔹 Abschließend möchte ich sagen, dass... (In conclusion, I would like to say that...)
By practicing these phrases, you will not only improve your German fluency but also be well-prepared to express yourself clearly and effectively in any discussion. Viel Erfolg!
