Connectors: 'deshalb', 'trotzdem', and 'deswegen'

In German, connectors are essential for creating more complex and logical sentences. They link ideas and show the relationship between them. This lesson focuses on three very common adverbial connectors: 'deshalb', 'deswegen', and 'trotzdem'. These words help you express cause, effect, and contrast.

🔵 Part 1: Expressing Consequence with 'deshalb' and 'deswegen'

'Deshalb' and 'deswegen' are synonyms. They both mean 'therefore', 'that's why', or 'for that reason'. They connect a cause (Grund) with a logical consequence or result (Folge).

The key is that the second part of the sentence is an expected result of the first part.

➡️ Sentence Structure
When you use these connectors, they start the second clause and are immediately followed by the conjugated verb. This word order is called inversion.

Sentence 1 (Cause). + deshalb/deswegen + Verb + Subject + ...

Let's look at some examples:

▶️ Example with 'deshalb':

🔹 Cause: Es regnet stark. (It is raining heavily.)
🔹 Consequence: Ich nehme einen Regenschirm mit. (I am taking an umbrella with me.)

🔗 Combined Sentence:
Es regnet stark, deshalb nehme ich einen Regenschirm mit.
(It is raining heavily, therefore I am taking an umbrella with me.)

▶️ Example with 'deswegen':

🔹 Cause: Ich habe die Prüfung bestanden. (I passed the exam.)
🔹 Consequence: Wir feiern heute Abend. (We are celebrating tonight.)

🔗 Combined Sentence:
Ich habe die Prüfung bestanden, deswegen feiern wir heute Abend.
(I passed the exam, that's why we are celebrating tonight.)

💡 Key Takeaway: 'deshalb' and 'deswegen' are interchangeable. They signal that the second clause is a direct result of the first. The verb always comes right after them!

🔵 Part 2: Expressing Contrast with 'trotzdem'

'Trotzdem' means 'nevertheless', 'despite that', or 'anyway'. It is used to connect a cause with an unexpected or contradictory result. It shows that something happened even though you might have expected the opposite.

↩️ Sentence Structure
Just like with 'deshalb' and 'deswegen', 'trotzdem' is followed by the conjugated verb and then the subject (inversion).

Sentence 1 (Cause). + trotzdem + Verb + Subject + ...

▶️ Example with 'trotzdem':

🔹 Cause: Er ist krank. (He is sick.)
🔹 Unexpected Consequence: Er geht zur Arbeit. (He is going to work.)

🔗 Combined Sentence:
Er ist krank, trotzdem geht er zur Arbeit.
(He is sick, nevertheless he is going to work.)

▶️ Another example:

🔹 Cause: Die Fahrkarte war sehr teuer. (The ticket was very expensive.)
🔹 Unexpected Consequence: Sie hat die Reise gebucht. (She booked the trip.)

🔗 Combined Sentence:
Die Fahrkarte war sehr teuer, trotzdem hat sie die Reise gebucht.
(The ticket was very expensive, but she booked the trip anyway.)

🔵 Summary: The Difference at a Glance

Let's compare them directly to see the logical difference:

🔸 deshalb / deswegen (therefore, that's why)
Cause ➡️ Logical Result
Ich bin müde, deshalb gehe ich ins Bett. (I am tired, therefore I am going to bed.)

🔸 trotzdem (nevertheless, despite that)
Cause ➡️ Unexpected Result
Ich bin müde, trotzdem sehe ich noch einen Film. (I am tired, nevertheless I am watching another movie.)

Mastering these connectors is a significant step in achieving B1 fluency. They allow you to build more sophisticated arguments and express your thoughts with greater precision. Pay close attention to the word order, and you will use them correctly in no time!
