The Simple Past (Präteritum): 'sein' and 'haben'

Welcome to our lesson on the Präteritum, also known as the Simple Past tense. 📖

In German, there are two primary ways to discuss past events: the Perfekt and the Präteritum. You are likely familiar with the Perfekt tense (e.g., 'Ich habe gegessen'), which is the most common form used in everyday spoken German.

The Präteritum, on the other hand, is the German equivalent of the English simple past (e.g., 'I ate', 'he was'). It is predominantly used in written language, such as in novels, news articles, and formal reports.

💡 So, why is it essential to learn at the A2 level? Because for a few very common and important verbs, the Präteritum is the preferred form even in spoken conversation. The two most crucial of these verbs are 'sein' (to be) and 'haben' (to have). Using their Präteritum forms will make your spoken German sound much more natural.

Let's explore the conjugation of these two verbs.

📘 Haben (to have) in Präteritum

The Präteritum form of 'haben' is 'hatten'. You will notice a '-te-' infix, which is typical for regular past tense verbs. The conjugation is as follows:

👉 Conjugation: 'hatten'
ich hatte (I had)
du hattest (you had - informal)
er/sie/es hatte (he/she/it had)
wir hatten (we had)
ihr hattet (you all had)
sie/Sie hatten (they/you had - formal)

Note that the 'ich' and 'er/sie/es' forms are identical ('hatte').

Examples:
✅ Gestern hatte ich keine Zeit. (Yesterday I had no time.)
✅ Hattest du einen schönen Urlaub? (Did you have a nice vacation?)
✅ Der Student hatte eine Frage. (The student had a question.)
✅ Wir hatten viel Glück. (We had a lot of luck.)
✅ Ihr hattet eine gute Idee. (You all had a good idea.)

📗 Sein (to be) in Präteritum

The verb 'sein' is irregular, so its Präteritum forms must be memorized. The past tense form is 'waren'.

👉 Conjugation: 'waren'
ich war (I was)
du warst (you were - informal)
er/sie/es war (he/she/it was)
wir waren (we were)
ihr wart (you all were)
sie/Sie waren (they/you were - formal)

Again, the 'ich' and 'er/sie/es' forms are identical ('war'). Be careful with the distinction between 'ihr wart' and 'wir/sie/Sie waren'.

Examples:
✅ Ich war letztes Jahr in Berlin. (I was in Berlin last year.)
✅ Wo warst du am Wochenende? (Where were you on the weekend?)
✅ Das Konzert war fantastisch! (The concert was fantastic!)
✅ Wir waren mit dem Ergebnis zufrieden. (We were satisfied with the result.)
✅ Ihr wart sehr pünktlich. (You all were very punctual.)

📌 Key Takeaways

1️⃣ Usage: For 'sein' and 'haben', always prefer the Präteritum forms ('war', 'hatte') over the Perfekt forms ('bin gewesen', 'habe gehabt') in both spoken and written German.

2️⃣ Word Order: The sentence structure remains the same as in the present tense (Präsens). The conjugated Präteritum verb simply takes the second position in a standard statement.

Mastering these two verbs in the simple past is a significant step forward in your German language journey. Practice them until they become second nature!
