📍 Grammar in Context: Prepositions of Place

Remember our prepositions? When planning travel, they are crucial for talking about destinations and locations.

➡️ Direction (Wohin? - Where to?): We use the Accusative case.
▫️ Ich fahre in die Schweiz. (for countries with articles like die Schweiz, die Türkei, die USA)
▫️ Wir fliegen in die Türkei.
▫️ Ich gehe an den Strand. (to a body of water/border)
▫️ Fahren wir zum Bahnhof? (to a specific place/building, uses 'zu' + Dative)
▫️ Wir reisen nach Deutschland. (for cities and most countries without articles)

➡️ Location (Wo? - Where?): We use the Dative case.
▫️ Ich bin in der Schweiz.
▫️ Wir sind am Strand.
▫️ Wir warten am Bahnhof.

💬 Talking About Past Plans: Modal Verbs in Präteritum

When you talk about what you wanted or were able to do, the Präteritum (simple past) of modal verbs is very common, especially in writing.

▫️ Ich wollte eine Reise nach Spanien machen. (I wanted to take a trip to Spain.)
▫️ Wir konnten leider keine günstigen Flüge finden. (Unfortunately, we couldn't find cheap flights.)
▫️ Musstest du das Hotelzimmer stornieren? (Did you have to cancel the hotel room?)

💡 Tip: In spoken German, for the Perfekt tense with modal verbs, people often use the "double infinitive" construction: "Ich habe nach Spanien fahren wollen." It looks a bit strange, but it's very common!

🧠 Giving Reasons and Stating Facts: Subordinate Clauses

Why did you choose that destination? What do you know about the schedule? Use 'weil' and 'dass'!

▫️ weil (because): The verb goes to the end of the clause.
"Ich fahre nach Italien, weil das Wetter dort schön ist."
(I'm travelling to Italy because the weather there is nice.)

▫️ dass (that): The verb also goes to the end.
"Ich habe gelesen, dass der Zug um 14:30 Uhr abfährt."
(I have read that the train departs at 2:30 PM.)

🗣️ Useful Phrases for Your Trip

Here are some ready-to-use sentences.

▫️ Ich möchte ein Zimmer für zwei Nächte buchen.
(I would like to book a room for two nights.)
▫️ Haben Sie noch ein Doppelzimmer frei?
(Do you still have a double room available?)
▫️ Was kostet eine Fahrkarte nach Hamburg?
(How much is a ticket to Hamburg?)
▫️ Wann kommt der Zug aus Berlin an?
(When does the train from Berlin arrive?)
▫️ Entschuldigung, wo ist der Check-in-Schalter für den Flug nach Wien?
(Excuse me, where is the check-in counter for the flight to Vienna?)

Now you have the tools to plan your own adventure. Viel Spaß bei der Planung! (Have fun planning!)
