Verb Conjugation in Present Tense (Präsens)

📚 Verb Conjugation in Present Tense (Präsens)

Welcome to one of the most fundamental topics in German grammar: verb conjugation! It might sound complex, but it's just the process of changing a verb to match the person or thing doing the action.

🤔 What is verb conjugation?

In English, we do this too, but it's simpler. We say "I go," but "he goes." We add an "-s" for he/she/it. In German, the verb ending changes for almost every person. This is how you know who is performing the action, even without explicitly stating the subject.

The present tense, or Präsens, is used to talk about:
✅ Actions happening now ("I am learning German.")
✅ Regular, repeated actions ("I go to school every day.")
✅ Future plans, often with a time indicator ("We are flying to Berlin tomorrow.")

👉 The Basics: Regular Verbs (Regelmäßige Verben)

Most German verbs in their basic form, the infinitive, end in -en (e.g., lernen - to learn, machen - to make/do, wohnen - to live/reside).

To conjugate a regular verb, you follow two simple steps:
1️⃣ Find the verb stem by removing the -en ending.
For lernen, the stem is lern-.
For wohnen, the stem is wohn-.

2️⃣ Add the correct ending to the stem based on the subject (the personal pronoun).

Here are the standard endings you need to memorize:

👤 ich (I) ➡️ Stem + e
Example: ich lerne (I learn)

👤 du (you, informal) ➡️ Stem + st
Example: du lernst (you learn)

👤 er/sie/es (he/she/it) ➡️ Stem + t
Example: er lernt (he learns)

👥 wir (we) ➡️ Stem + en (same as infinitive!)
Example: wir lernen (we learn)

👥 ihr (you, plural/group, informal) ➡️ Stem + t (same as er/sie/es!)
Example: ihr lernt (you all learn)

👥 sie/Sie (they / you, formal) ➡️ Stem + en (same as infinitive!)
Example: sie lernen (they learn) / Sie lernen (You learn, formal)

❗️Important Exceptions for Regular Verbs

If the verb stem ends in -d or -t (like arbeiten - to work), or in -m or -n after a consonant (like öffnen - to open), you add an extra -e- before the -st and -t endings to make it easier to pronounce.

Example: arbeiten (Stem: arbeit-)
du arbeitest (NOT arbeitst)
er arbeitet (NOT arbeitt)
ihr arbeitet (NOT arbeitt)

⚡️ The Most Important Irregular Verbs (Unregelmäßige Verben)

Some of the most common verbs in German are irregular. Their conjugation patterns don't follow the rules above and must be learned by heart. The two most crucial ones are sein (to be) and haben (to have).

🔵 sein (to be)
ich bin (I am)
du bist (you are)
er/sie/es ist (he/she/it is)
wir sind (we are)
ihr seid (you all are)
sie/Sie sind (they are / You are)

🔴 haben (to have)
ich habe (I have)
du hast (you have)
er/sie/es hat (he/she/it has)
wir haben (we have)
ihr habt (you all have)
sie/Sie haben (they have / You have)

Mastering verb conjugation is a key step towards fluency. Practice with different regular verbs, and make flashcards for sein and haben. You'll be using them in almost every sentence!
