Topic: Introducing Yourself (Vorstellung)

In this lesson, you will learn the essential phrases and questions for introducing yourself and getting to know someone in German. This is a fundamental skill for starting any conversation.

We will cover how to state your name, origin, residence, age, profession, and the languages you speak. We will also look at the important distinction between formal ('Sie') and informal ('du') address.

👋 Greetings (Begrüßung)
How you greet someone often depends on the time of day and the formality of the situation.

➡️ Hallo - Hello
A universal and common greeting, suitable for most informal situations.
➡️ Guten Morgen - Good morning
Typically used until around 10 or 11 AM.
➡️ Guten Tag - Good day
A standard, more formal greeting used from late morning until early evening (around 6 PM).
➡️ Guten Abend - Good evening
Used in the evening, from about 6 PM onwards.

👤 Name
To state your name, you have two primary options:

➡️ Ich heiße [Name]. - My name is [Name]. (Literally: I am called...)
➡️ Ich bin [Name]. - I am [Name].

❓ To ask someone for their name:

Formal: Wie heißen Sie? - What is your name?
Informal: Wie heißt du? - What is your name?

🌍 Origin (Herkunft)
To say where you are from, use the verb 'kommen' (to come).

➡️ Ich komme aus [Country/City]. - I come from [Country/City].
Example: Ich komme aus Kanada. (I come from Canada.)

❓ To ask about origin:

Formal: Woher kommen Sie? - Where do you come from?
Informal: Woher kommst du? - Where do you come from?

📍 Residence (Wohnort)
To say where you currently live, use the verb 'wohnen' (to live/reside).

➡️ Ich wohne in [City]. - I live in [City].
Example: Ich wohne jetzt in Hamburg. (I live in Hamburg now.)

❓ To ask where someone lives:

Formal: Wo wohnen Sie? - Where do you live?
Informal: Wo wohnst du? - Where do you live?

💼 Profession (Beruf)
To talk about your job, you can use the verb 'sein' (to be).

➡️ Ich bin [Profession] von Beruf. - I am a [Profession] by profession.
Example: Ich bin Ärztin von Beruf. (I am a doctor (female) by profession.)
➡️ If you are a student: Ich bin Student. (male) / Ich bin Studentin. (female).

❓ To ask about someone's profession:

Formal: Was sind Sie von Beruf? - What is your profession?
Informal: Was bist du von Beruf? - What is your profession?
A more common, natural way to ask is: Was machen Sie beruflich? / Was machst du beruflich? (What do you do for a living?)

🗣️ Languages (Sprachen)
To mention the languages you speak, use the verb 'sprechen' (to speak).

➡️ Ich spreche [Language] und [Language]. - I speak [Language] and [Language].
Example: Ich spreche Englisch und lerne Deutsch. (I speak English and am learning German.)

❓ To ask about languages:

Formal: Welche Sprachen sprechen Sie? - Which languages do you speak?
Informal: Welche Sprachen sprichst du? - Which languages do you speak?

👋 Saying Goodbye (Verabschiedung)

➡️ Tschüss! - Bye! (Common, informal)
➡️ Auf Wiedersehen! - Goodbye! (More formal, literally 'until we see again')
➡️ Auf Wiederhören! - Goodbye (Used only on the telephone)
