Modal Verbs (können, möchten, wollen)

Modal Verbs: können, wollen, möchten

Welcome to the lesson on Modal Verbs, or Modalverben in German.
These are special 'helper' verbs that modify the main verb in a sentence, expressing concepts like ability, desire, or intention. Using them correctly is a major step towards fluency.

The most important rule for sentence structure with modal verbs is:
1️⃣ The modal verb is conjugated (it changes to match the subject) and takes the second position in a standard statement.
2️⃣ The main verb (the action) moves to the very end of the sentence in its original, unchanged infinitive form (e.g., sprechen, lernen, gehen).

Let's compare:
🔹 A simple sentence: Ich lerne Deutsch. (I learn German.)
🔹 With a modal verb: Ich will Deutsch lernen. (I want to learn German.)
See how lernen is now at the end? This is the golden rule!

Now, let's explore three essential A1 modal verbs.

➡️ können – to be able to / can
Use können to talk about ability (what you can do) or possibility (what is possible).

🧠 Conjugation:
Notice that the 'ich' and 'er/sie/es' forms are identical, which is common for modal verbs.
ich 👉 kann
du 👉 kannst
er/sie/es 👉 kann
wir 👉 können
ihr 👉 könnt
sie/Sie 👉 können

Example Sentences:
💬 Er kann sehr gut schwimmen. (He can swim very well.)
💬 Kannst du mir helfen? (Can you help me?)
💬 Wir können am Wochenende ins Museum gehen. (We can go to the museum on the weekend.)

➡️ wollen – to want to
Use wollen to express a strong desire, a firm plan, or a clear intention. It's more direct and less polite than möchten.

🧠 Conjugation:
ich 👉 will
du 👉 willst
er/sie/es 👉 will
wir 👉 wollen
ihr 👉 wollt
sie/Sie 👉 wollen

Example Sentences:
💬 Ich will ein neues Auto kaufen. (I want to buy a new car.)
💬 Was willst du heute Abend machen? (What do you want to do tonight?)
💬 Die Kinder wollen nicht schlafen. (The children do not want to sleep.)

➡️ möchten – would like to
This is the polite way to express a wish or a desire. It's perfect for ordering food, making requests, or expressing preferences gently.
Good to know: möchten is technically a special form of the verb mögen (to like), but in A1 German, it's used and conjugated like its own modal verb for polite wishes.

🧠 Conjugation:
ich 👉 möchte
du 👉 möchtest
er/sie/es 👉 möchte
wir 👉 möchten
ihr 👉 möchtet
sie/Sie 👉 möchten

Example Sentences:
💬 Ich möchte einen Kaffee trinken, bitte. (I would like to drink a coffee, please.)
💬 Möchten Sie einen Termin vereinbaren? (Would you [formal] like to make an appointment?)
💬 Wir möchten nach Berlin fahren. (We would like to travel to Berlin.)

📌 Summary of Sentence Structure

Remember the word order is crucial.

✅ Statements:
Subject + Modal Verb + (other info) + Infinitive Verb.
Du + kannst + gut Deutsch sprechen.

✅ Yes/No Questions:
Modal Verb + Subject + (other info) + Infinitive Verb?
Kannst + du + mir helfen?

✅ W-Questions (What, Where, etc.):
W-Word + Modal Verb + Subject + (other info) + Infinitive Verb?
Was + möchtest + du + essen?

By mastering können, wollen, and möchten, you unlock a huge range of expression. Practice conjugating them and building sentences by always remembering to send the main verb to the end.
